A Simple Guide to Planning a Seed Garden

Learn how planning ahead can yield big results from your seed harvest. Knowing how a seed is saved allows you to let nature take its course and give back even more than you put in. This class breaks down the easy-to-save, intermediate-to-save and advanced-to-save varieties most commonly grown in home gardens. The seed life cycle is already happening in your garden so it’s easy to integrate seed saving into your current practices. With a little planning, you can greatly increase your personal seed bank and keep plants – including vegetables, herbs and flowers – vigorous and adapting in your garden.

AMAZING VEGETABLES A TO Z FULL SERIES

 

This is the class that will hone your skills as an amazing vegetable gardener. It is designed to take beginners to a new level and remind intermediate gardeners of the success strategies that always work when we go off course and forget the science of what got us to success in the first place. We will cover the science of vegetable gardening, do some myth busting, and provide you with some clear cut strategies to get the biggest harvest from the space you have.

The classes are 2 ½ hours each and are designed so that you can take the entire series or drop in for a refresher on the single class or classes that you want to brush up on. We will use a combination of hands on and lecture and demonstration to keep you engaged.

Session 1: Raised Beds

Planning the best location, choosing in ground or raised beds and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We will look at re-purposing materials to create raised beds. We will cover soil building and choosing amendments. We will build around what has not worked for you in the past and set you on a course for improvement for your 2017 vegetable garden. Every season is a Do-Over!

 

Session 2: Planting

Planting is the focus of this session. How to decide what to plan, the seasons of the vegetable garden and getting the biggest bang for your gardening buck. We will cover cool season and warm season plants and the ones that grow best here in Colorado. Then take a look at seed starting and see a demonstration of starting seeds inside and direct sowing outside as well as transplanting. Then we will cover spacing strategies designed to give you the biggest harvest for the space you have available.

 

Session 3: Extended Gardening

Keeping the Garden going for 3 seasons and beyond is the theme of this session. We will cover the importance of Crop Rotation and how to do it. We will learn different ways to succession plant and how it can maximize the harvest. We will address season extension strategies to protect your crops. We will also cover the concept of companion planting and what is true and what is not.

 

Session 4: Pests, Problems, & Harvesting

The most common pests and diseases of the vegetable garden will be addressed, how to spot problems before they get away from you and good cultural practices to avoid problems, organics, watering, fertilizing and insect and disease controls. We will also discuss how to know when your veggies are ready for harvest.

Battling the Japanese Beetle

The Japanese beetle has been in many neighborhoods along the Front Range and is moving to new communities. This unwelcome beetle is concerning home owners with serious damage to many landscape plants. Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

This course is designed for the Front Range gardener beginner. The basics of what is needed to adjust gardening skills from other climates to the Front Range’s finicky climate are covered. If you have never gardened here before or are looking for more success, this is the class for you! Learn the skills necessary to become an enthusiastic gardener. Annuals, perennials and vegetables are discussed, along with trees and shrubs that thrive in our climate, elevation and varying soils. Plant selection, planting and troubleshooting is discussed.

Subsequent weeks focus on the elements, water needs, fertilizers and organic gardening.

About the Instructor: Noemi Nuñez

In addition to being a multilingual yoga instructor, Noemi Nunez has been an immigration attorney, competitive gymnast, environmental activist. During her yoga instruction, she incorporates alignment based practice with creative sequencing, fun transitions, breath facilitation and meditation.

Blueberry Success on the Front Range

 

This class provides students with the know-how to successfully cultivate a variety of blueberry cultivars in Colorado. Topics include: why blueberries typically do not perform well in our region; practical methods for overcoming these challenges; irrigation and fertilizer recommendations; cultivar recommendations; protection from pests; natural history and more.

 

Instructor First name? Reich developed a system for successful blueberry culture in Colorado that has proven to be reliably successful for over a decade. Whether your interest in blueberries is for health, great-tasting snacks and/or as an edible, ornamental garden plant with great fall foliage colors, this class provides a detailed plan for success.

 

 

Joel A. Reich M.S. is a private horticultural consultant based in Longmont, Colorado. Mr. Reich has expertise in many realms of horticulture, from nursery and greenhouse production to landscaping, small and large farm operations, research projects, interiorscapes, public gardens, etc.

Mr. Reich has developed particular expertise in production and management of fruit crops in Colorado. Prior to forming Reich Consulting Services llc, Mr. Reich was a Horticulture Agent with Colorado State University Extension, where he was the authority on fruit crops. Much of Mr. Reich’s work at CSU involved developing and delivering adult education programming to a wide variety of audiences. Before joining C.S.U., Mr. Reich received a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz and an M.S. from Oregon State University. He also worked as a researcher with Oregon State Extension and as an instructor at Cascadia College near Seattle.

Since childhood, Mr. Reich has had a deep fascination with plants, especially those producing pleasant sensory experiences for human beings. Farming, gardening, teaching and consulting have allowed him to work closely with diverse fruit crops in both field and laboratory settings. Through this combination of academic and production experience, he has developed an extensive working knowledge of how to grow a wide range of high-value crops from backyards to large commercial production facilities. Currently, Mr. Reich is focused on helping Front Range growers expand the number and variety of fruit crops being grown in our region.

You’ve learned to layer colored pencil, now learn techniques to draw effectively in this medium. Apply your drawing skills and learn new methods specific to colored pencils. Techniques include layering, building and burnishing in color. This versatile, portable medium is perfect for sketching on location as well as producing studio pieces. Learn through instruction, demonstration and practice on small studies of botanical subjects. You’ll be ready to produce a finished plate in Botanical Illustration in Colored Pencil II.

Botanical Illustration in Colored Pencil II- Online with On-Site Component

  

Take your colored pencil skills to the next level and become proficient in this fun, versatile medium. Work through a step-by-step process to create a preparatory layered drawing. Learn techniques to create texture, detail and depth to enhance your subject. Experiment with different surfaces and solvents for blending and shading. Add depth with atmospheric perspective and learn finishing techniques that will make your drawings pop. Individual attention will guide you to create a finished botanical plate.

The Off-Site Learning Approach

Following the two-day concentrated classroom instruction, three internet sessions cover the remaining course elements. The successful completion of final artwork (a plate) one month (30 days) after the conclusion of the on-site session is the culmination of each of the distance learning courses.

 

Students must use a scanner or digital camera to record their weekly achievements and email the high-resolution image to the instructor and the school manager. All student questions, as well as instructor answers, recommendations and suggestions are handled by email. The student must send a scan of the final plate to the instructor and the school manager in order to receive credit for the course.
