June 4: Therapeutic Aspects of the Japanese Garden

Join Japanese Garden Curator Ebi Kondo as he demonstrates the practice of seasonal de-candling of the evergreens and shearing of shrubs into semi-spherical shapes, known as tamamono karikomi. Kondo discusses the design concepts of Japanese gardens: nature, seasons, moment and boundaries. Our Japanese Garden is one of our most therapeutic gardens and brings visitors into the present moment with its thoughtful design features.

June 11: Wisdom in Weeding

Ralph Waldo Emerson described a weed as a plant whose virtue has not been discovered. When weeds are taking over your garden, it’s hard to see anything positive in them. During this session learn about the common weeds that are in your garden, how to remove them and some of the lessons they can teach us. Weeding can be a mindful experience that can teach us about the “weeds” in our lives and the work it takes to control them.

June 18: The Art in Bonsai

Join Bonsai Specialists Larry Jackel as we look at a bonsai tree the way a bonsai artist would. Learn about bonsai styles and pruning to unlock the masterpiece within. Bonsai teach us a great lesson in pruning: removing and letting go of what no longer serves us so we may tap in to our full potential.

June 25: Virtual Meditative Plant Walk at the Gardens

Learn to walk mindfully among plants. Pause to engage with plants and connect with different physical sensations, isolating the senses to feel the temperature of the air and the warmth of the sun, tune into sounds and scents, and take in the abundance of life all around that we are sometimes too busy to notice. This is also an opportunity to see what is blooming in June at the Gardens.
