Ayurveda Four-Part Series

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga that deals directly with healing the mind and body. Through diet, lifestyle, breathing exercises, herbal medicine and spiritual practices, Ayurveda offers a unique set of tools for individuals to regain balance with their own true nature. Ayurveda is centered on the idea that all beings are a unique composition of the five natural elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which make up the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). Learning how the different doshas function and how they impact the mind and body, you can begin to recognize signs of imbalances early on and implement Ayurvedic practices to bring yourself back to balance.

In this four-part series, each class gives you some examples of what Ayurveda has to offer for your wellness routine. The series begins with an exploration of what the doshas are and how they affect you on an individual level. With that foundational knowledge, the second class is a yoga practice that flows through the five elements and three doshas within all of us to prepare for a blissful resting pose. Receive yoga sequences to take home to continue to practice on your own.

A major concept of Ayurveda is maintaining health through lifestyle protocols and eating seasonally with good food combinations to prevent illness or disturbance to your health. In the third class, explore some herbal remedies prepared in a kitchen for the purpose of preventing disease. In the fourth class, we cook with the six different tastes of Ayurveda and feast together. Take home recipe ideas from the last two classes to keep the exploration going at home.

 

Your Mind-Body Constitution. What Is Your Dosha?

Your dosha is your mind-body type and it is determined by factors such as your genetic makeup and when you were born. This workshop briefly covers the basics of Ayurveda and how to determine your dosha, as well as includes some pranayama (or breath-work) that is balancing for all three doshas.

 

Ayurveda and Vinyasa Yoga: Flow Through the Five Elements of Nature in a Movement Meditation

Yoga is the sister science of Ayurveda. By incorporating the Ayurvedic principles of the five elements in the natural world into a yoga practice, this class serves to connect us to our own true nature. The two complementary sciences are combined to create an illuminating and slow-moving meditation with yoga postures that can be modified for all levels. View the healing art of yoga through an Ayurvedic lens with some take-home practices for each season and mind-body type.

 

Ayurvedic At Home Remedies: How to Use Your Kitchen for Simple Remedies

Wed. Sept 16, 2020, 6-8 p.m.

Explore the common spices and herbs found in most kitchens and how they can be used for remedies and incorporated into your daily diet to address imbalances. Sample some concoctions that are suitable for each dosha. Class concludes with meditation tools that you can use at home.

This class covers the Ayurvedic principle of Agni, the digestive fire, and how to cultivate it in order to nourish your body fully. Learn to assess the different digestive symptoms and how you can adjust your lifestyle to address them. Sample the different tastes associated with each dosha and see how to create a balanced meal.

Instructor: Farnosh Family
Farnosh was a long time student and teacher of yoga before turning to the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda, for help in healing after the birth of her first child. What she learned in those transformational months led her to a life guided by the principles of Ayurveda for herself and her family. She has studied with many teachers of yoga, ayurveda, and sanskrit including Dr. Vasant Lad, Shiva Rea, Sonia Massoco, Maria Garre, Patricia Wickman, and Dr. Bharat Vaidya. She holds an MA in organic chemistry from UCLA and a BA in environmental chemistry from Columbia University.

Beginning Bonsai

Are you mystified by the many centuries old Japanese tradition of bonsai? Join us for an entertaining and informative class with nationally recognized bonsai masters Harold Sasaki and Larry Jackel as they debunk the myths, fictions and misconceptions surrounding this living art form. Each participant receives a tree, pot, wire, soil and gravel in this hands-on experience of creating a finished bonsai, which you can home.

Bilingual Yoga

 

Cultivate presence through breath-linking movements in this vinyasa yoga class cued in both English and Spanish. Cues will be the same in both languages, and those familiar with yoga will find a common language through the traditional Sanskrit names of the poses. This flowing, dynamic class is beneficial for all practitioners, and teaches important foundations while leaving space for more advanced practitioners to play.

It’s mission is to serve as a cultural bridge by bringing diversity and inclusivity to yoga rooms around the world! Noemi has worn some fun hats in this lifetime, among those: legal advocate, former competitive gymnast, environmental activist, professional dance performer, beer judge, and her favorite hat as of late: Multilingual Yoga Instructor! Her signature Bilingual Yoga program has been featured by NBC Universal as an impactful grassroots outreach community offering by introducing this wellness practice to underserved demographics. Several editorial articles call Noemi an “Influencer and Inclusionary”, and her work is showcased at art exhibits by world-class museums, cultural and academic institutions.

Energize your photography and find sources of inspiration all around you. In this course we’ll cover places where you can find inspiration, subjects to inspire your photography and challenges to get you to see the world with fresh eyes.

In a world of distractions and competing demands, a meditation practice focusing on the present moment enhances respite and repose. Join us as we explore the powerful benefits of practicing mindfulness with our breath and steps amid the serenity of the Gardens.

 

This session will be held online in a Zoom meeting. Details on how to join the class will be emailed the day of the program. Since we cannot meet at the Gardens, the instructor will use guided imagery for this meditation.

Therapeutic Thursdays - ONLINE

Join Denver Botanic Gardens' horticultural therapists from your home or office as we share techniques used in the Therapeutic Horticulture program. Engage your senses each week as we guide you in how to connect with plants in your everyday life.

All ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Only one registration is needed per streaming device. Advanced registration required.

July 9: A Seed's Journey

Join Denver Botanic Gardens’ Therapeutic Horticulture Intern Rudi Wimberley from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in learning about the journey of a seed. Seeds are the beginning of almost all plant life. From a seed, plants send out their first roots and sprout their first leaves. For germination to happen, sometimes harsh circumstances are necessary. During this session, learn how seeds germinate and how they relate to the seasons of life we all go through. Rudi will demonstrate how to make seed bombs and teach us how they are used.

 

July 16: Protecting our Pollinators

Pollinators are essential to human life. Flowering plants that are pollinated by insects and animals provide us with food that we eat and clean air that we breathe. In this session learn about some of the unique pollinators that visit Denver Botanic Gardens and their amazing journeys. These magnificent journeys can often teach us about our own stories of transformation or struggle. We discuss tips on how to attract and protect these pollinators in our own backyards.

 

July 23: The Lavender Fields at Chatfield Farms

Meet Zephrine Hanson, a graduate of the Veterans Farm Program and one of the farmers at our Chatfield Farms location, for a behind-the-scenes look at our lavender fields. Zephrine, who now leads the wellness portion of the Veterans Farm Program, shares how her experience with farming has been a therapeutic aspect in her life. She teaches how to harvest and use lavender in a variety of ways.

 

July 30: Virtual Meditative Plant Walk at the Gardens

Learn to walk mindfully among plants. Pause to engage with plants and connect with different physical sensations, isolating the senses to feel the temperature of the air and the warmth of the sun, tune into sounds and scents, and take in the abundance of life all around that we are sometimes too busy to notice. This is also an opportunity to see what is blooming in July at the Gardens.

Instructors: Angie Andrade and Catharine McCord

 

Angie Andrade, HTR is a senior horticulturalist at the Gardens and manager of the Therapeutic Horticulture Program. Angie is a registered horticultural therapist through the American Horticultural Therapy Association.

Catharine McCord is a program coordinator at the Gardens for adult education programs and the Therapeutic Horticulture Program. She is also the recipient of the 2020 American Horticultural Society’s Great American Gardeners Award for Horticultural Therapy.

 

Vinyasa, Violins and Vino

Yoga with a twist. Enjoy vinyasa yoga, live violin music and a picnic! Relax in nature as Blake Burger, certified instructor and Gardens’ horticulturist, leads an hour-long class in the Gardens. Conclude the evening with a bring your own picnic and music performance. BYOB wine and beer is permitted.

 

ONSITE PROGRAMMING

A limited offering of adult education programming will follow social distancing protocols, with advanced registration and seating in a room or outdoors with students separated by at least six feet and wearing face coverings.

 

 

Instructor: DBG's own horticulturalist and yoga instructor Blake Burger

Musician: Brittany Erickson is a classical violinist living in Denver, Colorado. She has performed chamber music and orchestral works across the country including with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Curtis Institute, and the Harvard University Orchestra. By day, Brittany is an educator who supports school districts to design innovative new schools, and in her spare time, she can be found enjoying the Colorado mountains or tending her vegetable garden with her partner, John.

Special Instructions: Please bring your own yoga mat, water, picnic and a beverage or adult beverage of your choosing. Please be sure to bring valid ID if consuming alcohol.

This is a rain or shine event, both the yoga class and picnic will be held under the clear tent and lights of the amphitheater. Class will begin promptly at 6:30pm, so please arrive early enough to get settled in.
