A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins promptly at the schedule start time and lasts 2.5 hours. All summer walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk. Fall and Winter programs are held at Chatfield Farms.

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

 

Special Instructions: All walks begin promptly at the start time and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

All summerprogram locations are at a park near Conifer.

Join us at Denver Botanic Gardens for two evenings packed with answers to all those looming and mysterious gardening questions. Get started on the right foot this year with all of our best beginner classes, carefully designed to equip you with all the tools you will need to master that garden once and for all!

 

Classes include:

Garden Planning 101 - Where do I Start?

This beginner class will take you step by step through the process of laying out a plan of attack for your garden! Whether you are starting with a blank slate garden or working with an old outdated garden this class will give you the basics on where to start. It will discuss needs and planning tools for raised beds, container gardens and in-ground vegetable gardens. We will discuss the basics of garden locations, sun requirements, water needs, starting from seed, transplanting and the basics of planning the organization of perennials and annuals, trees and shrubs. This class is the perfect fit for anyone needing to understand how the garden works together as a whole.

Soils 101

Soils will always be the first place to start when building a beautiful garden. This class will cover the best management practices for building your soil for in-ground beds, containers and raised beds. It will discuss the basics of composting as well as demonstrate the value of soil testing.

Beginning Vegetable Gardening

If you have never planted edible plants or had little success at growing your own vegetables, our instructor will walk you through the ABCs from planning, soil preparation, crop selection, watering, fertilizing, pest protection, and harvesting your first vegetable garden. We will cover tips on the most popular vegetables to grow, including leafy salad greens, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and more. You'll leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to successfully do each gardening task, and take home a planting guide that will help you through the entire growing season.

Annuals and Perennials for Color in the Garden

Plants provide the backbone of the garden with vibrant colors, textures, and forms that weave together to create your own personal oasis. Learn the basics of perennials, annuals and biennials, how to make the best selections for your garden and how to best maintain your plants throughout the season. From the traditional to the unusual we will explore the limitless varieties of plants and send you into the growing season prepared.

These classes combined usually cost more then $200 but with New Gardener Boot Camp event will be $60 members, $80 non-members. Register Early as space is limited.

At Home - Grab & Go Flower Arrangements

Right now most of us are confined to our homes with limited trips to the store, so join us for easy tips and tricks to brighten your home with flowers! Make use of simple items found around the house and some flowers from your local grocer.

 

This 30 minute program will be held online in a webinar format. Details on how to join the webinar will be sent to all participants via email.

 

If you would like to follow along and make an arrangement, here are some items to have on hand:

Lisa Weddel AIFD PFCI has been in the floral industry for over 30 years.  She has been active in all areas of the industry from designer, teacher to owner of several businesses. Lisa has a floriculture degree, is an Iowa Master florist, as well as being an accredited member of the American Institute of Floral Designers organization where she currently holds the position of President of the South-Central Chapter.  In addition, Lisa has served on the Board of Trustees of the Professional Floral Communicators International as Chairman.This is an organization under the umbrella of the Society of American Florists.

Past floral accomplishments include designing at the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA for over 16 parades as a designer as well as a team leader. She designed on the floral team for President George W. Bush's 2005 Presidential Inauguration, designed at the 2019 Kentucky Derby and has the same honor in 2020.

 

Laura Tonner has enjoyed working in the floral industry for five years. Her favorite part has been designing for weddings and events, but she has done just about everything in the floral industry. She has experience in retail, deliveries and the day-to-day operations of a small flower shop. All of this has led to her latest endeavor as the co-owner of Designs Inspired by You, the first of its kind floral experience studio.

Laura has a floral certificate from a local design school, won an academic scholarship from FAR (Floral Association of the Rockies) and has attended the Rose Parade as a designer for two years.

Ayurveda and Vinyasa Yoga: Flow Through the Five Elements of Nature in a Movement Meditation

 

Yoga is the sister science of Ayurveda. By incorporating the Ayurvedic principles of the five elements in the natural world into a yoga practice, this class serves to connect us to our own true nature. The two complementary sciences are combined to create an illuminating and slow-moving meditation with yoga postures that can be modified for all levels. Ayurveda Four-Part Series

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga that deals directly with healing the mind and body. Through diet, lifestyle, breathing exercises, herbal medicine and spiritual practices, Ayurveda offers a unique set of tools for individuals to regain balance with their own true nature. Ayurveda is centered on the idea that all beings are a unique composition of the five natural elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which make up the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). Learning how the different doshas function and how they impact the mind and body, you can begin to recognize signs of imbalances early on and implement Ayurvedic practices to bring yourself back to balance.

In this four-part series, each class gives you some examples of what Ayurveda has to offer for your wellness routine. The series begins with an exploration of what the doshas are and how they affect you on an individual level. With that foundational knowledge, the second class is a yoga practice that flows through the five elements and three doshas within all of us to prepare for a blissful resting pose. Receive yoga sequences to take home to continue to practice on your own.

A major concept of Ayurveda is maintaining health through lifestyle protocols and eating seasonally with good food combinations to prevent illness or disturbance to your health. In the third class, explore some herbal remedies prepared in a kitchen for the purpose of preventing disease. In the fourth class, we cook with the six different tastes of Ayurveda and feast together. Take home recipe ideas from the last two classes to keep the exploration going at home.

 

Your Mind-Body Constitution. What Is Your Dosha?

Your dosha is your mind-body type and it is determined by factors such as your genetic makeup and when you were born. This workshop briefly covers the basics of Ayurveda and how to determine your dosha, as well as includes some pranayama (or breath-work) that is balancing for all three doshas.

This class covers the Ayurvedic principle of Agni, the digestive fire, and how to cultivate it in order to nourish your body fully. Learn to assess the different digestive symptoms and how you can adjust your lifestyle to address them. Sample the different tastes associated with each dosha and see how to create a balanced meal.

Beginning Bonsai

Are you mystified by the many centuries old Japanese tradition of bonsai? Join us for an entertaining and informative class with nationally recognized bonsai masters Harold Sasaki and Larry Jackel as they debunk the myths, fictions and misconceptions surrounding this living art form. Each participant receives a tree, pot, wire, soil and gravel in this hands-on experience of creating a finished bonsai, which you can home.

Bilingual Yoga

 

Cultivate presence through breath-linking movements in this vinyasa yoga class cued in both English and Spanish. Cues will be the same in both languages, and those familiar with yoga will find a common language through the traditional Sanskrit names of the poses. This flowing, dynamic class is beneficial for all practitioners, and teaches important foundations while leaving space for more advanced practitioners to play.

Using fountain pens is a wonderfully different and relaxing way to write and draw, especially when combined with nature! This course will teach you the basics of using and maintaining a fountain pen. You will also have an opportunity to sample various types of pens, paper and ink to help you decide which you prefer. You’ll even receive a fountain pen and notebook that are yours to keep! Open to all skill levels. Lecture style class with a hands-on portion that allows students to try out different fountain pens, inks and papers.

Evening Vinyasa Yoga at the Gardens

Looking for an amazing place to practice your yoga skills, how about the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens?

Vinyasa yoga weaves beautiful movement with challenging postures, and cultivates a sense of peace and calm by the end of each yoga class.
