Dia de Mole Negro - ONLINE

Bring the essence of Día de los Muertos into the kitchen by balancing the bitter with the sweet.

Día de los Muertos celebrates loved ones who have passed. An important part of this celebration is the creation of altars, filled with ofrendas that feature the loved ones’ favorite earthly treats, such as sweets, fine cigars, chocolate, mezcal, beer and favorite foods.

Mole, a traditional food of Día de los Muertos, originated in the town of Oaxaca, Mexico, where it is still a huge part of the culture, and recipes are passed down throughout generations. Oaxaca’s population is nearly 50% indigenous and its celebration of Día de los Muertos is renowned.

As loved ones make their way into the afterlife, those who are left behind remember them by cooking their favorite variation of a perfectly balanced mole. The secret to mole is to balance sweet and savory while incorporating flavors preferred by the person cooking the dish. Chef Sandoval’s version of mole uses Latin American chocolate, spices and ripe plantains.

**Special Notes**

The cost of this program includes a take-home kit with the necessary ingredients, available for pick-up at Denver Botanic Gardens York Street location. Kit pick-up details will be sent to participants at least one week prior to the program.

The pick-up date is Sunday, November 1, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m..

 

Each kit includes enough supplies for two individuals.

Honduras-born and Colorado-raised, Edwin Sandoval is a modern multicultural creator of food. Chef Sandoval spent the past 13 years moving through the ranks of professional kitchens in famed restaurants such as Le Grand Bistro & Oyster Bar, Spuntino, Beatrice & Woodsley, and Telegraph Bistro.

Learning to use the tools within the Snapseed app will fine tune your photography and editing skills, creating a stronger visual impact for all your photos. We explore the tools within the app and how to properly use them to make the most of your smartphone photography. This class is for anyone with a smartphone, iPhone or Android.

Jeanette Burkle is a commercial and editorial photographer with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and consulting. Since 2003, Jeanette has successfully owned and managed Galie Photography, while designing and delivering seminars on a wide range of photography topics. An award winning-photographer, Jeanette combines an engineering background with a strong artistic sense. With the belief that photography is part art and part science, she strives to use her unique background to produce art that is infused with a creative vision and improved by knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of photography. She has worked with many corporate clients including ExxonMobil, George Mason University, American Red Cross, John Marshall Bank, AmeriChoice, Medtronic, Harris Corporation, and Long & Foster Realty. Jeanette’s work has been honored through the Virginia Professional Photographers Association with such recognition as the highly distinguished Fuji Masterpiece Award and the Kodak Gallery Award.

 

Jeanette has been teaching photography since 2005. Her students respond well to her fun, upbeat classes, and Jeanette loves to see this passion be reflected in her students’ increased confidence as photographers.

Therapeutic Thursdays - ONLINE

Join Denver Botanic Gardens' horticultural therapists from your home or office as we share techniques used in the Therapeutic Horticulture program. Engage your senses as we guide you in how to connect with plants in your everyday life.

All ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Only one registration is needed per streaming device. Advanced registration required.

Details on how to join the program streamed live through Vimeo will be emailed 30 minutes before the start of the program. Program time is 2 p.m. Mountain Time. Sessions are between 15-30 minutes long.

 

October 29: The Restorative and Reflective Nature of Water

Join us for this very special co-produced episode with The One World One Water Center. Together with OWOW’s Co-Director Jennifer Riley-Chetwynd, we discuss the history of the waterways at Denver Botanic Gardens and explore the therapeutic aspects of water. Joining us is Ken Wright, founder of Wright Water Engineers, and Alexandra Smith, our landscape operations specialist, who shares with us a little about maintaining all of the Gardens’ waterways.

 

November 19: Traditional Uses of Infused Vinegars

Infusing vinegar is a great way to use homegrown or store-bought herbs and make thoughtful gifts. In this session we are joined by clinical herbalist Shelley Torgove, founder of Denver’s Artemisia & Rue, who shares with us how to use fresh and dried herbs to infuse vinegars. Learn to make delicious dressings for salads or roasted veggies. Discover the health benefits and history of fire cider, a traditional remedy to combat colds and support the respiratory system.

 

December 17: Virtual Meditative Plant Tour of the Gardens

Take a mindful, virtual walk among plants. As we pause, we engage with the images of plants and use our sense memory to connect with nature: imagine the warmth of the sun on your skin, the sounds of birdsong and hum of insects, and the scents of flowers and earthy bark. There is an abundance of life all around us that we are sometimes too busy to notice.

This is also an opportunity to see what is blooming at the Gardens.

Catharine McCord is a program coordinator at the Gardens for adult education programs and the Therapeutic Horticulture Program. She is also the recipient of the 2020 American Horticultural Society’s Great American Gardeners Award for Horticultural Therapy.
