A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

 

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins at 9 a.m. and lasts 2.5 hours. All walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

 

Special Instructions: All walks begin at 9 a.m. and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of plant extracts and oils to encourage health and wellness of the mind, body and spirit. Learn the basics of aromatherapy, safety and precautions and blending techniques using a variety of essential oils. In addition, herbalist Blake Burger discusses the ancient practice of smoke remedies, covering plants and herbs such as frankincense and myrrh, palo santo, copal and sage.

Blake Burger's passion for plants began at a young age gardening in Illinois and only grew stronger once he moved to Colorado in 2000 and began hiking in the wilderness areas of Colorado. There, he began to cultivate a great curiosity and appreciation for the diverse flora found along the hiking trails. In 2007, he left his career as a food scientist and worked as a seasonal gardener for Denver Botanic Gardens. After one year, he was hired full time as a horticulturalist. Throughout his years at the Gardens he has worked with tropical plants, native plants, vegetables and herbs. After receiving his Herbalist Certification here in Denver, Blake immediately began working with the vast array of medicinal plants growing in the Gardens. He founded the Denver Medicinal Plant Society in 2015, created and maintains several medicinal plant beds at the Gardens  York Street location, and has laid the foundation for the Gardens  first Herbalist Certificate Program. As a certified yoga instructor, Blake has led more than 1,000 yoga classes over six years and created a nationally recognized yoga program here at the Gardens. Blake believes in a multifaceted approach to health and wellness: eat well, move your body, never stop learning, get outside and connect.

Amberle is a Colorado native who has been working as a holistic healthcare practitioner in the Denver community for over seven years. She is trained and certified in community herbalism, permaculture design, reflexology, reiki and wellness coaching. Amberle aims to connect with people in need of support to enable them to mindfully, skillfully and confidently care for themselves, others and their environment. She believes that people flourish as they take ownership of their health and quality of life through tapping into education, intuition, empowerment, community, nature, spirit and sharing the highs and lows of life. Beginning Bonsai

Are you mystified by the many centuries old Japanese tradition of bonsai? Join us for an entertaining and informative class with nationally recognized bonsai masters Harold Sasaki and Larry Jackel as they debunk the myths, fictions and misconceptions surrounding this living art form. Each participant receives a tree, pot, wire, soil and gravel in this hands-on experience of creating a finished bonsai, which you can home.

Cacao Ceremony with Tibetan Singing Bowls and Movement

Drink ceremonial-grade, responsibly sourced cacao from Guatemala and be guided into a ceremonial experience with chocolate! This ceremony will be complimented by Tibetan singing bowls, which have been used for thousands of years to promote healing.

There is a reason that cacao has been used medicinally and spiritually for nearly 3,000 years there is more to this small bean than meets the eye. Native to Central and South America, cacao was used by the Aztecs and Mayans in sacred ceremonies. The cacao tree was one of these ancient peoples' most prized, and chocolate was the drink of choice. Chocolate was used as preventative medicine as well as healing purposes. Historical texts contain an enormous list of medical uses for cacao among them are increased libido, fertility and abetted longevity, as well as improved energy, reduced fever and asthma, heart-opening, and having an overall calming effect. Most cacao that is easily found today has been processed and roasted in such a way that it loses many of its health benefits. Slow down and open your heart; learn about this sacred plant.

Using fountain pens is a wonderfully different and relaxing way to write and draw, especially when combined with nature! This course will teach you the basics of using and maintaining a fountain pen. You will also have an opportunity to sample various types of pens, paper and ink to help you decide which you prefer. You’ll even receive a fountain pen and notebook that are yours to keep! Open to all skill levels. Lecture style class with a hands-on portion that allows students to try out different fountain pens, inks and papers.

Garden Harvest and Roots

Fall is the perfect season for connecting with roots. We spend time grounding and digging medicinal roots in the garden, discussing seasonal energy patterns, preventative care, digging tools & good practices regarding harvesting roots. Fall can also be chaotic and stressful, so we will make an immune-boosting, sickness-fighting, stress-combatting remedies like cough syrup. Many of the roots we learn about contain inulin, so a discussion of prebiotics, digestive health, fermentation and immunity is explored as well.

Kundalini Yoga - Single Session

Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening energy and unlocking our inner potential through breathing techniques, movements, stretching, meditation and mantra. This ancient and sacred practice is the oldest form of yoga and is an effective way to recharge and heal the body.

Lotion Making and Spirit Herbal Remedies

The first portion of this class focuses on making your own hydrating herb-infused lotion. Incorporate infused herbal oils for an added skin replenishing boost. Morning Hatha Yoga

Morning Hatha Yoga is an all-levels practice, open to everyone! Come unwind through gentle movement, stretching, pranayama and guided meditation. This class holds space to allow the student to gain strength and flexibility at their own pace with an emphasis on safety and alignment.

 

Instructor: Meredith Saver. What began as a physical journey for Meredith quickly grew into a mental and emotional one, too. Her yoga mat has always held space for her to “come home” in her body and in her heart. In this this often-challenging and ever-changing life, yoga serves as her “drishti”- her external point of focus that draws awareness inward. In 2015 Meredith completed 500 hours of yoga teacher training at the Nosara Yoga Institute in Costa Rica with Don and Amba Stapleton. While she is drawn to many forms of yoga, Meredith’s Hatha vinyasa classes are a well-rounded, playful and intelligent blend of movement and meditation. As a teacher it is always her aim to create a safe learning environment so that anyone can show up to step on their mat and find their slice of “coming home.”

When it is chilly, we will meet in the Orangery (front of the greenhouse complex). There will be signs starting from the after-hours entrance on the north side of the main entry that will direct participants.

Tibetan Singing Bowls Concert

Denver yoga instructor and sound healer Chris Anne Coviello and her husband Jason Coviello will be performing together to bring you this experience. The concert will begin with Jason playing his Hang Drum which is a very rare steel drum that is made by only two people in the world. Some say it sounds like a stringed instrument. Jason's Hang Drum is tuned to the note that vibrationally corresponds to the heart chakra and when he plays the drum, he takes you on a heart-opening journey.

Jason and Chris Anne will then begin playing the singing bowls which are tuned to all the different musical notes that correspond to the different chakras, so they will balance the energy in the body. And since we are made up of mostly water, the vibrational effect will be a full body cellular massage.

Tibetan Singing bowls have been used for thousands of years as instruments of healing. So come relax and close your eyes and drift into an altered state which facilitates the body to heal. Make sure you wear comfy clothes and bring a yoga mat or blanket so that you may lie down and let the bells carry away with them all that no longer serves you. Yoga with a twist. Enjoy vinyasa yoga, live violin music and a picnic! Relax in nature as Blake Burger, certified instructor and Gardens’ horticulturist, leads an hour-long class in the Gardens. Conclude the evening with a bring your own picnic and music performance. BYOB wine and beer is permitted.

Musician: Brittany Erickson is a classical violinist living in Denver, Colorado. She has performed chamber music and orchestral works across the country including with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Curtis Institute, and the Harvard University Orchestra. By day, Brittany is an educator who supports school districts to design innovative new schools, and in her spare time, she can be found enjoying the Colorado mountains or tending her vegetable garden with her partner, John.
