A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins at 9 a.m. and lasts 2.5 hours. All summer walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk. Fall programs are held at Chatfield Farms.

Price: $30, $25 member

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

Special Instructions: All walks begin at 9 a.m. and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

All summer program locations are near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver.

All October - December program dates take place outdoors at Denver Botanic Gardens' Chatfield Farms, located at 8500 W Deer Creek Canyon Road, Littleton, CO 80128.

Bracts and Bromeliads: Perspective Lover's Dream Come True!

Bromeliads, a family of more than 3,300 species, provide the most amazing collection of foliage colors and patterns found in the plant world. The foliage takes many different shapes, from needle thin to broad and flat, symmetrical to bizarre, soft to spiky. Bromeliads provide a habitat for many thousands of species of other plants, as well as reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and other creatures. The relationship is often symbiotic, with the plant supplying water and shelter and the other organism providing protein or nutrients. These fascinating ornamental plants offer an exciting challenge in perspective, pattern and value and an outstanding opportunity to take your pen and ink skills to a new level of sophistication.

Begin the class by practicing and refining perspective skills as you work in pencil to construct a botanically correct “linear scaffold” and value map. Next, using ink, discover advanced techniques that turn stipple patterns into color and mimic variegated leaf markings. Learn how to layer and manipulate lines and stipples to develop a full range of values and atmospheric perspective. Go one step further and add a surprise inhabitant! Build a new appreciation for what can be achieved using black and white as you develop an elaborate final pen and ink plate.

Prerequisites: Botanical Illustration in Pen and Ink I, Perfecting Perspective.

Fee: $260 member, $310 non-member.

No prerequisites.

Kundalini Yoga - Single Session

Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening energy and unlocking our inner potential through breathing techniques, movements, stretching, meditation and mantra. This ancient and sacred practice is the oldest form of yoga and is an effective way to recharge and heal the body.

The class, taught by Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., Master of Kundalini yoga, starts and ends with beautiful and ancient chants which open and calm the heart. A carefully planned sequence of postures, movements and breathing exercises, called a kriya, follows. The techniques stimulate the nervous and immune systems, while improving strength and flexibility. Participants may find a peace of mind and experience benefits including relief from back pain, stress, addiction, depression, insomnia and weight control.

Literature of the Land Book Club - Fall

Join us for the Fall 2019 session of Literature of the Land, a book club series hosted by the Helen Fowler Library. We’ll read three books over three months, focusing on a specific topic of interest. This fall we will be discussing farmland in America. What does it mean to farm, and how can we sustainably feed a nation? Learn if we can harvest while addressing issues of chemical waste, loss of topsoil, and the ever-changing landscape of corporate agriculture from the experiences of family farms and land workers who care about what they grow from soil to seed.

Starting in September, we will discuss This Blessed Earth by Ted Genoways. October will bring us to Farming for the Long Haul by Michael Foley, and we’ll wrap up in November with Lentil Underground by Liz Carlisle.
