Are you a blank slate when it comes to starting your very own garden? Worried about ending the growing season with a pile of dead plants and sad vegetables? Join us at Denver Botanic Gardens for a full day event, packed with answers to all those looming and mysterious gardening questions. Get started on the right foot this year with all of our best beginner’s classes, carefully designed to equip you with all the tools you’ll need to master that garden once and for all!

Garden Planning 101… where do I start?

This beginner’s class will take you step by step through the process of laying out a plan of attack for your garden! Whether you are starting with a blank slate garden or working with an old outdated garden this class will give you the basics on where to start. It will discuss needs and planning tools for raised beds, container gardens and in-ground vegetable gardens. We will discuss the basics of garden locations, sun requirements, water needs, starting from seed, transplanting and the basics of planning the organization of perennials and annuals, trees and shrubs. This class is the perfect fit for anyone needing to understand how the garden works together as a whole.

 

Soils 101

Soils will always be the first place to start when building a beautiful garden. This class will cover the best management practices for building your soil for in-ground beds, containers and raised beds. It will discuss the basics of composting as well as demonstrate the value of soil testing.

 

Beginning Vegetable Gardening

If you have never planted edible plants or had little success at growing your own vegetables, our instructor will walk you through the ABCs from planning, soil preparation, crop selection, watering, fertilizing, pest protection, and harvesting your first vegetable garden. We will cover tips on the most popular vegetables to grow, including leafy salad greens, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and more. You'll leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to successfully do each gardening task, and take home a planting guide that will help you through the entire growing season.

 

Annuals and Perennials for Color in the Garden

Plants provide the backbone of the garden with vibrant colors, textures, and forms that weave together to create your own personal oasis. Learn the basics of perennials, annuals and biennials, how to make the best selections for your garden and how to best maintain your plants throughout the season. From the traditional to the unusual we will explore the limitless varieties of plants and send you into the growing season prepared.

 

These classes combined usually cost more than $200, but with New Gardener Boot Camp, the event will be $60 members, $80 non-members. Register early as space is limited.

A Simple Guide to Planning a Seed Garden

 

Learn how planning ahead can yield big results from your harvest. The seed life cycle is already happening in your garden, so it is easy to integrate seed saving into your personal seed bank and keep plants - including vegetables, herbs and flowers - dynamic and adapting to your garden. This class breaks down the easy-to-save, intermediate-to-save and advanced-to-save varieties most commonly grown in home gardens.

The Parmenters will cover wet and dry seed saving, plant families, seed terms, resources, harvesting, storage, isolation distances, hand pollinating and more.

They are owners of Smart Greenhouses LLC, a sustainable greenhouse design company and Miss Penn s Mountain Seeds, providing regionally adapted seeds for extreme climates.

Amazing Vegetables A to Z: The Garden Build

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

This is the class that will hone your skills as an amazing vegetable gardener. It is designed to take beginners to a new level and remind intermediate gardeners of the success strategies that always work when we go off course and forget the science of what got us to success in the first place. We will cover the science of vegetable gardening, do some myth busting, and provide you with some clear cut strategies to get the biggest harvest from the space you have.

The classes are 2 ½ hours each and are designed so that you can take the entire series or drop in for a refresher on the single class or classes that you want to brush up on. We will use a combination of hands on and lecture and demonstration to keep you engaged.

Please note: We will not cover gardening in containers in depth in this class. If that is your interest, please see Crops in Pots.

 

 

Session 1: Raised Beds

Planning the best location, choosing in ground or raised beds and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We will look at re-purposing materials to create raised beds. We will cover soil building and choosing amendments. We will build around what has not worked for you in the past and set you on a course for improvement for your 2017 vegetable garden. Every season is a Do-Over!

Art of Pressed Flowers

We will make beautiful floral bookmarks and cards, a reusable floral glass votive, and a botanical dipped candle to take home. Art of Smartphone Photography

 

This is the class for anyone who uses their smartphone camera to create photographs. Whether you’re new to photography or a seasoned pro, there’s more to learn about leveraging this accessible digital technology. You’ll gain insight into the photography skills necessary to make the most out of your images - from shooting to editing. Next, you will also learn the various platforms to share and print your images, and how to keep all of your precious memories safe. Whether you have an iPhone or an Android, join us for a fun-filled class!

Instructor: Jeanette Galie Burkle is a commercial and editorial photographer with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and consulting. Since 2003, Jeanette has successfully owned and managed Galie Photography, while designing and delivering seminars on a wide range of photography topics. An award winning-photographer, Jeanette combines an engineering background with a strong artistic sense. With the belief that photography is part art and part science, she strives to use her unique background to produce art that is infused with a creative vision and improved by knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of photography. She has worked with many corporate clients including ExxonMobil, George Mason University, American Red Cross, John Marshall Bank, AmeriChoice, Medtronic, Harris Corporation, and Long & Foster Realty. Jeanette’s work has been honored through the Virginia Professional Photographers Association with such recognition as the highly distinguished Fuji Masterpiece Award and the Kodak Gallery Award.

Beginning Farmers Core Curriculum & Hands-On Workshops

 

 

Are you interested in growing and selling vegetables but don’t know where to start? Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado State University Extension have partnered to develop a certificate program that will introduce you to the ins and outs of becoming a successful market farmer on five acres or less.

 

By participating in this program, you will attend seven core curriculum lectures that will cover everything from planning your farm to selling at market. You will also apply what you have learned in the classroom on working farms during five hands-on workshops. Finally, you will have the opportunity to choose up to four advanced, elective classes that cover innovative topics such as seed saving and season extension. Lecture classes and workshops will take place on Fridays, 9-noon and electives will take place in the evening.

 

Staff from our program will work with you to help find hands-on experiences at local farms. This may take the form of a regular volunteer shift, an internship or an apprenticeship. If you have your own farm already up and running, DBG or CSU Extension staff can work with you over the growing season on any issues or questions that arise.

 

 

To complete the certificate you must:

- Attend all Core Curriculum (7 total) & Hands-On Workshops (5 total)

- Attend a minimum of 2 Elective courses (4 offered in 2019, register individually)

- Complete all courses within the 2018-2019 calendar year

Berries and Grapes for the Front Range

Berries are easy fruits to grow and make luscious-eating whether fresh, frozen or preserved. New developments are increasing the types we can grow here. Come find out the types of berries that do well in our climate and soil, what varieties are recommended, where to purchase and how to manage and prune for best results. Grapes for our area are also discussed.

Cooking on the Wood Burning Stove

By spring, the food reserves were running low and prairie families were eager for the return of spring and fresh greens. On the wood stove in the McClean Soddy at the Plains Conservation Center, we make a common winter dinner of root vegetable stew, cornbread and apple pie. Recipes and all supplies provided. Appropriate for adults and children ages 12 and up.

Digital Workflow for Photographers

Learn to create a solid digital photography workflow using Adobe LightRoom. This excellent program can help you organize your photo archives and process your images into exciting and personal images. Scott will take you from camera set-up through image output. All photography skill levels welcome. Some computer experience required.

Fearless Shrub Pruning

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

Learn how to prune both deciduous and evergreen shrubs for long term plant health and appearance in this class. Various types of pruning and the situations where they are appropriate will be illustrated. An emphasis will be placed on flowering shrubs and how to prune them for best bloom. For people with overgrown shrubs, rejuvenation pruning to reduce size and reinvigorate growth will be of interest.

You can grow food in the mountains! Wind, hail, deer, bears, extreme temperatures, we have heard it all. The Parmenters have been growing organic food at 8,120 ft. since 1992 and their techniques and experiences apply to all Colorado s elevations and hardships.

This class covers many great foods that thrive in the cool weather of the mountains, wind-proof season extenders, hail covers, raised bed preparation, bio-intensive growing, compost options against bears, crop rotation, companion planting, succession planting, vegetables for the shade, mulching, seed starting, seed saving and more. Altitude does not matter; this class is designed to help all Colorado gardeners overcome growing in the wild, wild West.

Growing Roses in Colorado - Planning a Rose Garden

The popularity of growing roses began thousands of years ago and continues today. The rose growing series offered by American Rose Society Consulting Rosarians and experts from the Denver Rose Society will cover how to grow healthy, easy care beautiful roses for years to come. The series covers secrets to successful rose growing, no pain pruning, versatile shrub roses, fragrant roses, and winter care. Choose one class or take them all and come away with confident rose growing skills and greater appreciation for the “Queen of Flowers.”

Roses grow great in Colorado! Many rose varieties thrive in our region, and can fill your garden with beautiful blooms, color and fragrance. Let one of our experienced rosarians with the Denver Rose Society lead you through the basics of growing roses, how to plant, fertilize and water. We’ll cover healthy practices for growing happy and vigorous roses through the season. You’ll leave the class with the know-how to make roses the Queen of Flowers in your garden!

Invitation to Ikebana: Contemporary

 

Ikebana is an expression of our respect and appreciation towards nature. We observe life through the arrangement of plants. During each class, participants receive hands-on instruction to put together an arrangement to take home.

This class is an introduction to the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. This will be a hands-on workshop open to all skill levels. The instructor will demonstrate the art form and then the students will proceed to make an arrangement. After creating an arrangement the instructor will do a critique.

Shoka (or Seika, depending on each Ikebana school) is today's name for original "Ikebana" style which started in Japan in the early 17th century. Shoka expresses the life and the beauty of plants in nature.

In July, we would like to make a Shoka arrangement which could bring coolness of water on a hot summer day. (Pond Scenery-2. Land-and-Water form) Please bring two kenzans and a deep dish-style container with wide opening, if you have.

Instructor: Kazuko Kozai is a Senior Professor of Ikenobo Ikebana School, which is the largest Ikebana school begun in Japan in 1462. She has studied Ikebana for more than 40 years and teaches enthusiastically in the Denver and Boulder area.

Mountain Tomatoes

Technically, the mountains and tomatoes do not get along. Let s learn why.

In 1991, the Parmenter s were told they could not grow tomatoes in the mountains. Today, they work with around 250 varieties of tomatoes at 8,120 ft. in the Wet Mountains.

Learn about tomato varieties from around the world, especially those grown in climates like ours, along with tomato varieties for all elevations. We discuss seed starting, seed adaptation, soil preparation, organic fertilizers and non-toxic bug and disease control. We also discuss ideas for night-time covers and structures.

Penn and Cord will come armed with high-altitude adapted tomato seeds, demos and tips for reaching success with tomatoes. No more green tomatoes!

Passive Solar Greenhouse Growing

Ever feel like you don t know what you re doing in your greenhouse? Or perhaps you have plans to build one, but what then? Penn and Cord Parmenter have been designing and growing year-round in passive solar greenhouses since 2000. 

This class takes the mystery out of something that should be so easy and yet can seem so hard.  Matching appropriate plants to microclimates and seasons, building soils, non-toxic bug control, organic fertilizers, structural improvement, air-flow, resources and more are addressed. We discuss favorite foods, herbs and flowers along with over-wintering potted plants and succession planting for a year-round harvest.

The Parmenters cover preventative methods for bugs and disease as well as what to do when you ve lost control.

Photography Zen: Cultivating Creativity Through Mindfulness

Have you ever felt your photography has hit a wall? Do you worry you’ve lost your creative spirit, or worse, that you’ve never unlocked your inner artist? If so, you’re not alone! In the words of photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, the goal of photography is to put the head, the eye, and the heart on the same line of sight. For this reason, he believed that it is an illusion that photos are made with the camera alone. The creative soul speaks through the practice of self-compassion and inner peace. We will explore a variety of topics that will open the pathways to self-discovery and expressive photography. In this interactive class, through the practice of mindfulness and a series of exercises in contemplative photography you will experience a deeper connection to your photography as a true expression of yourself.

Special instructions: This class is open to all levels of experience. Since this is a hands-on class, you will need a camera—whether it’s a DSLR, point and shoot, or smartphone, and have working knowledge of it.

 

Preserving Citrus: Marmalade

Learn to make dazzling citrus marmalades from the best the winter season has to offer. We will use fresh, organic citrus and make a bitter, sweet, and succulent marmalade. We will discuss different types, uses, and the history of marmalade. Participants will take home at least 1 jar of handmade marmalade preserves.

Instructor: Kathy has been an avid canner for over two decades. She tries to forage for the fruit she preserves and/or uses fruit grown from local farms and orchards whenever possible. She is a mother of two boys, and has a full pantry of canned goods. A Ph.D. trained scientist, she loves understanding the science behind canning and loves sharing information about home food preservation with as many people as she can. Parlaying her love of canning into a career, Kathy founded Modern Gingham Preserves and sold her jams nationally and won a Good Food Award for her Raspberry Violet jam in 2015.

Kathy is married to a British guy, so she has also developed a taste for marmalade and rhubarb, but she still hates drinking tea.
