Healing the Spirit with Plant Brushing, Song and Prayer

Learn the art of spiritual healing with plants as we practice the traditional art of plant brushing. Discover about how herbs can be used to cleanse and strengthen the spirit. Play with different plants, including basil, which has long been considered “the herb of humility,” helps us open to the wisdom of life’s lessons and allows us to listen to the working of the divine.

Instructor: Shelley Torgove is a practicing Clinical Herbalist and was one of Denver's first herbal teachers, helping cultivate awareness of the power of plants to heal. Shelley is a leader of the grass-roots western herbal medicine movement in Denver. She is an international teacher and a nationally recognized botanical medicine practitioner with over 25 years of experience, specializing in bio-regional herbal medicine and women's health. She works and teaches both in Denver and the Yucatan. Shelley is the owner of Artemisia & Rue Herbal Studies Program in Denver. In addition to being a guest lecturer at Denver Botanic Gardens for the last 20 years, Shelley grew up in the backyard of the Gardens around Cheeseman Park and began frequenting the Gardens when she was seven years old.

Herbalism Certificate Program

Aloe can be used to promote healthy skin and soothe sunburn. Oatstraw can support the nervous system to promote a sense of calm. Elderberry syrup and fire cider can be used during cold and flu season. Calendula salve is soothing and can be used as an antibacterial for skin abrasions. For thousands of years plants have been used to promote healthy natural living; this is the base for the new hobby Herbalism Certificate Program at Denver Botanic Gardens.

With a hands-on teaching approach and seed-to-product goal, our instructors guide students through every step of using plants for health and wellness. The inaugural program offers a unique learning experience to transform each student into a confident, knowledgeable and resourceful steward of plants by providing a strong foundation of practical and powerful herbalism knowledge.

Over 75 medicinal plants are studied, including some grown on site at the Gardens and those native to Colorado. Other areas of study include herb gardening in Colorado, plant identification and wildcrafting. With some of the regions finest herbalists assembled to lead, students learn in the classroom, in the Gardens and out in the field.

Blake's passion for plants began at a young age gardening in Illinois and only grew stronger once he moved to Colorado in 2000 and began hiking in the wilderness areas of Colorado. There, he began to cultivate a great curiosity and appreciation for the diverse flora found along the hiking trails. In 2007, he left his career as a food scientist and worked as a seasonal gardener for Denver Botanic Gardens. After one year, he was hired full time as a horticulturalist. Throughout his years at the Gardens he has worked with tropical plants, native plants, vegetables and herbs. After receiving his Herbalist Certification here in Denver, Blake immediately began working with the vast array of medicinal plants growing in the Gardens. He founded the Denver Medicinal Plant Society in 2015, created and maintains several medicinal plant beds at the Gardens  York Street location, and has laid the foundation for the Gardens  first Herbalist Certificate Program. As a certified yoga instructor, Blake has led more than 1,000 yoga classes over six years and created a nationally recognized yoga program here at the Gardens. Blake believes in a multifaceted approach to health and wellness: eat well, move your body, never stop learning, get outside and connect.

 

Kimberly is passionate about facilitating deep relationships between people, nature and animals. Kimberly holds a Masters degree in Counseling and a Bachelors degree in Outdoor Education and Plant Biology. Currently she is owner and operator of both The Canine Effect, her dog training business, and Relational Rewilding Nature Guiding. Kimberly has designed and led environmental and humane education programs at state parks, outdoor education centers and animal shelters throughout the country. She is a Master Naturalist, a Native Plant Master, and has participated in continuing education programs through Wilderness Awareness School, 8 Shields Institute, and The Tracking Project - training in cultural and natural awareness, animal tracking, plant studies, bird language, primitive skills, and community building.

 

Monticue is an African American plant healer, herbalist, music artist and certified reiki master. He is also the co-owner of Jiridon Apothecary, a pop-up herbal entity offering great teas and other natural products to aid in the healing of body, mind and spirit. He teaches classes and leads local herb walks. His enthusiasm and charismatic demeanor make him pure fun to learn from. Intuitive wisdom combined with a deep working knowledge of plants makes him a practitioner skilled in meeting people where they are.

 

Farnosh was a long time student and teacher of yoga before turning to the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda, for help in healing after the birth of her first child. What she learned in those transformational months led her to a life guided by the principles of Ayurveda for herself and her family. She has studied with many teachers of yoga, ayurveda, and sanskrit including Dr. Vasant Lad, Shiva Rea, Sonia Massoco, Maria Garre, Patricia Wickman, and Dr. Bharat Vaidya. She holds an MA in organic chemistry from UCLA and a BA in environmental chemistry from Columbia University.

 

Cat is a holistic practitioner and wellness educator with 19 years of professional experience assisting people to achieve optimal physical and emotional health. Utilizing her skills as a certified herbalist, nutritionist, nature and forest therapy guide, and practitioner of nonviolent communication, she skillfully incorporates a combination of wellness practices into her work with the intention of empowering people to co-create optimal wellness for themselves and their communities. Currently, her focus is facilitating resilience, restoration and deep nourishment for body, mind and spirit through optimal nutrition, plant medicine and nature immersion. She offers a variety of community classes, plant walks and nature connection experiences, and is pursuing a master s degree in ecopsychology in alignment with her commitment to bridge the perceived gap between humans and the natural world for the benefit of both.

 

Amberle has been working as a holistic healthcare practitioner and plant fanatic in the Denver community for almost a decade. She is trained in community herbalism, permaculture design, organic low-till farming, reflexology, reiki, wellness coaching and is a Colorado Master Gardener. Amberle endeavors to connect with people in search of support to enable them to mindfully, skillfully and confidently care for themselves, others and their environment. She believes that people flourish as they take ownership of their health and quality of life through tapping into resources like education, intuition, empowerment, community, ritual, nature, spirit and sharing the highs and lows of life. She can usually be found farming, gardening and regaling anyone who will listen with tales about nature while experimenting with them in an unending variety of inspired ways. Borage & Berry Apothecary is Amberle s ongoing passion project, offering unique herbal remedies, integrative healing sessions, educational opportunities and therapeutic gardening services that are thoughtfully tailored to each person and project.

 

How to Create and Lead a Community Herbal Gathering Circle

 

Welcome to the Herb Circle! These practical and inspiring teachings are designed so you can bring forth a safe and inspiring circle for your community. We talk about how to hold the container for sharing, the simple ceremony of smudging for collective well-being and how to bring to life a group altar. This class covers the energies of the Four Directions and how to open and close a circle. How to Plant a Tree: Tree and Shrub Selection and Planting

Trees and shrubs are one of the greatest property investments and can greatly increase a home’s value. Trees are also expensive, so learn how to determine what species is best for your yard, where and when to plant it plant and how to care for it. Evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs have varying preferred planting times and care strategies.

This class also shares tips on what to look for when you go to the nursery, how to dig a proper hole to ensure the best root spread in the appropriate amount of time and when and how to prune. Also learn how to properly care for your tree to avoid transplant shock or winter desiccation injury. This class can make homeowners more confident when choosing or planting trees and shrubs or when supervising contractors.

Introduction to Xeriscape

Xeriscape is not only a concept, it should be a way of life in Colorado.

Gardening in a way that conserves water and enhances our lives seems like a no-brainer. But, breaking the paradigm of landscapes dominated by Kentucky bluegrass has been slow in coming. However, since the early '90s, we've been making progress and people have been implementing beautiful, low water consuming, low maintenance, wildlife attracting, jaw dropping beautiful gardens.

In this course I will de-mystify low water landscapes by explaining the seven principles of xeriscape and answering every question you can throw my way. Oh, and we'll look at some beautiful Denver area xeriscape gardens while we're at it!

Invitation to Ikebana: Modern

Ikebana is an expression of respect and appreciation towards nature. We observe life through the arrangement of plants. During each class, participants get hands-on instruction to put together an arrangement to take home.

Moribana-style Ikebana was developed in the late 19th century in Japan and became very popular because of its flexibility without losing natural atmosphere. During each class, participants will get hands-on instruction to put together an arrangement to take home.

If a participant has enough experience on Moribana, she /he could go forward to Nageire arrangement during class.

 

Instructor: Akiko Buckmaster, born in Japan, is a master teacher of Ohara Ikebana School. She has been teaching Ikebana in the Denver area for forty years.

Instructor: Kazuko Kozai is a Senior Professor of Ikenobo Ikebana School, which is the largest Ikebana school begun in Japan in 1462. She has studied Ikebana for more than 40 years and teaches enthusiastically in the Denver and Boulder area.

Lisa Weddel AIFD PFCI has been in the floral industry for over 30 years.  She has been active in all areas of the industry from designer, teacher to owner of several businesses. Lisa has a floriculture degree, is an Iowa Master florist, as well as being an accredited member of the American Institute of Floral Designers organization where she currently holds the position of President of the South-Central Chapter.  In addition, Lisa has served on the Board of Trustees of the Professional Floral Communicators International as Chairman.This is an organization under the umbrella of the Society of American Florists.

Past floral accomplishments include designing at the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA for over 16 parades as a designer as well as a team leader. She designed on the floral team for President George W. Bush's 2005 Presidential Inauguration, designed at the 2019 Kentucky Derby and has the same honor this coming May.

 

Laura Tonner has enjoyed working in the floral industry for five years. Her favorite part has been designing for weddings and events, but she has done just about everything in the floral industry. She has experience in retail, deliveries and the day-to-day operations of a small flower shop. All of this has led to her latest endeavor as the co-owner of Designs Inspired by You, the first of its kind floral experience studio.

Laura has a floral certificate from a local design school, won an academic scholarship from FAR (Floral Association of the Rockies) and has attended the Rose Parade as a designer for two years.

Lecture – The Kitchen Mycologist

This illustrated presentation by Eugenia Bone explains basic mycology through the lens of the kitchen, covering how mushrooms grow, why some mushrooms are only collected in the wild, and why cultivated and wild types taste so different. It delves into the various lifestyles of fungi, the impact fungi have on healthy gardens and crops, all about truffles, mushroom nutrition and poisoning. A great talk for beginners!

Her work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Saveur, Food & Wine, and Gourmet. A member of the American Society of Science Writers and former president of the New York Mycological Society, Eugenia has lectured widely in venues such as the New York Public Library, and has been a guest on radio programs and podcasts, most recently on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “To The Best of Our Knowledge” and Mushroom Revival’s podcast “Mushrooms and Microbes with Eugenia Bone.” She is a member of the faculty at the New York Botanical Garden where she teaches classes on microbial ecology, psychedelic mushrooms, mycology and food preservation.

In this introductory workshop with Amie Krug of Boriya + Co, we will learn four basic knots of macramé. We will then use these knots to craft a plant hanger for an airplant! Also covered will be the history of macramé and the steps necessary to create macramé pieces including: planning a pattern, measuring and sourcing rope.

All materials to fashion your plant hanger and an air plant will be provided.

She received her BFA in art from Palm Beach Atlantic University, and developed a love for textile design during her years spent in Rajasthan, India. Amie has taught macramé workshops since 2015, and recently had her first solo exhibition in Buena Vista entitled "Rivers Edge."

Technically, the mountains and tomatoes do not get along. Let s learn why.

In 1991, the Parmenter s were told they could not grow tomatoes in the mountains. Today, they work with around 250 varieties of tomatoes at 8,120 ft. in the Wet Mountains.

Learn about tomato varieties from around the world, especially those grown in climates like ours, along with tomato varieties for all elevations. We discuss seed starting, seed adaptation, soil preparation, organic fertilizers and non-toxic bug and disease control. We also discuss ideas for night-time covers and structures.

Penn and Cord will come armed with high-altitude adapted tomato seeds, demos and tips for reaching success with tomatoes. No more green tomatoes!

Passive Solar Greenhouse Growing

Ever feel like you don t know what you re doing in your greenhouse? Or perhaps you have plans to build one, but what then? Penn and Cord Parmenter have been designing and growing year-round in passive solar greenhouses since 2000. 

This class takes the mystery out of something that should be so easy and yet can seem so hard.  Matching appropriate plants to microclimates and seasons, building soils, non-toxic bug control, organic fertilizers, structural improvement, air-flow, resources and more are addressed. We discuss favorite foods, herbs and flowers along with over-wintering potted plants and succession planting for a year-round harvest.

The Parmenters cover preventative methods for bugs and disease as well as what to do when you ve lost control.

Perspective Drawing in the Gardens

Learn the basics of depicting objects in space, and one-, two- and three-point perspective. Learn about elliptical and aerial perspective. After classroom instruction, students will move into the gardens to put their new drawing techniques into practice.

Instructor: Mitch Caster teaches drawing at the Art Students League of Denver, and before that, at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. He started his career as a news artist and courtroom illustrator. Mitch now works as a fine artist and shows his paintings in galleries in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

Photography Expeditions at Plains Conservation Center

 

Photography expeditions to the Plains Conservation Center offer opportunities to capture the life and the seasonal characteristics of the prairie in the best light possible. In addition there will be ample time to capture photos of wild and domestic creatures, native plants and historical structures. All photography skill levels are encouraged to attend. The emphasis will be on high dynamic range photography with guidance from David Winger. A tripod is highly recommended along with clothes for protection against possible rain and or cold.

Preserving Mushrooms

Mushroom Preservation explores all the primary techniques used in preparing for preservation and preserving mushrooms, explaining the challenges home preservers face preserving wild products and the particularities of mushroom preservation in general.

Propagate Your Favorite Roses

Just about everyone grows a rose bush or two. Congress designated the rose as America’s national floral emblem in 1986.
