A New Gardener Boot Camp

Are you a blank slate when it comes to starting your very own garden? Worried about ending the growing season with a pile of dead plants and sad vegetables? Join us at Denver Botanic Gardens for a full day event, packed with answers to all those looming and mysterious gardening questions. Get started on the right foot this year with all of our best beginner’s classes, carefully designed to equip you with all the tools you’ll need to master that garden once and for all!

Garden Planning 101… where do I start?

This beginner’s class will take you step by step through the process of laying out a plan of attack for your garden! Whether you are starting with a blank slate garden or working with an old outdated garden this class will give you the basics on where to start. It will discuss needs and planning tools for raised beds, container gardens and in-ground vegetable gardens. We will discuss the basics of garden locations, sun requirements, water needs, starting from seed, transplanting and the basics of planning the organization of perennials and annuals, trees and shrubs. This class is the perfect fit for anyone needing to understand how the garden works together as a whole.

 

Soils 101

Soils will always be the first place to start when building a beautiful garden. This class will cover the best management practices for building your soil for in-ground beds, containers and raised beds. It will discuss the basics of composting as well as demonstrate the value of soil testing.

 

Beginning Vegetable Gardening

If you have never planted edible plants or had little success at growing your own vegetables, Brien will walk you through the ABCs from planning, soil preparation, crop selection, watering, fertilizing, pest protection, and harvesting your first vegetable garden. Brien will cover tips on the most popular vegetables to grow, including leafy salad greens, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and more. You'll leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to successfully do each gardening task, and take home a planting guide that will help you through the entire growing season.

 

Annuals and Perennials for Color in the Garden

Plants provide the backbone of the garden with vibrant colors, textures, and forms that weave together to create your own personal oasis. Learn the basics of perennials, annuals and biennials, how to make the best selections for your garden and how to best maintain your plants throughout the season. From the traditional to the unusual we will explore the limitless varieties of plants and send you into the growing season prepared.

 

These classes combined usually cost more than $200, but with New Gardener Boot Camp, the event will be $60 members, $80 non-members. Register early as space is limited.

Advanced Photo Editing in Adobe Lightroom

 

Have you used Adobe Lightroom for basic photo editing but want to get more out of your images? Learn advanced photo editing using one of the most popular and versatile photography programs on the market today, Adobe Lightroom. Gain an understanding of the different develop submodules with a focus on the tone curve, HSL and split toning submodules. This class is for anyone with a good understanding of Lightroom for basic photo editing.

 

This is a lecture style class with review of images, discussion and a Q&A session. Students must bring a laptop with a paid version of Adobe Lightroom Classic (Version 5 or higher) installed. The free version (Lightroom CC) will not work for this class. Students can bring their own images, but will also be provided with some images to edit, so they should have an available USB port to download images.

Art of Pressed Flowers

Can't wait for spring flowers? Spend an enjoyable morning creating your own masterpieces with gorgeous pressed flowers. We will make beautiful floral bookmarks and cards, a reusable floral glass votive, and a botanical dipped candle to take home. Learn the best flowers to grow and how to press for optimal color, durability and longevity. Handout and all materials provided.

Art of Smartphone Photography

 

This is the class for anyone who uses their smartphone camera to create photographs. Whether you’re new to photography or a seasoned pro, there’s more to learn about leveraging this accessible digital technology. You’ll gain insight into the photography skills necessary to make the most out of your images - from shooting to editing. Next, you will also learn the various platforms to share and print your images, and how to keep all of your precious memories safe. Whether you have an iPhone or an Android, join us for a fun-filled class!

Instructor: Jeanette Galie Burkle is a commercial and editorial photographer with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and consulting. Since 2003, Jeanette has successfully owned and managed Galie Photography, while designing and delivering seminars on a wide range of photography topics. An award winning-photographer, Jeanette combines an engineering background with a strong artistic sense. With the belief that photography is part art and part science, she strives to use her unique background to produce art that is infused with a creative vision and improved by knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of photography. She has worked with many corporate clients including ExxonMobil, George Mason University, American Red Cross, John Marshall Bank, AmeriChoice, Medtronic, Harris Corporation, and Long & Foster Realty. Beginning Farmers Core Curriculum & Hands-On Workshops

 

 

Are you interested in growing and selling vegetables but don’t know where to start? Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado State University Extension have partnered to develop a certificate program that will introduce you to the ins and outs of becoming a successful market farmer on five acres or less.

 

By participating in this program, you will attend seven core curriculum lectures that will cover everything from planning your farm to selling at market. You will also apply what you have learned in the classroom on working farms during five hands-on workshops. Finally, you will have the opportunity to choose up to four advanced, elective classes that cover innovative topics such as seed saving and season extension. Lecture classes and workshops will take place on Fridays, 9-noon and electives will take place in the evening.

 

Staff from our program will work with you to help find hands-on experiences at local farms. This may take the form of a regular volunteer shift, an internship or an apprenticeship. If you have your own farm already up and running, DBG or CSU Extension staff can work with you over the growing season on any issues or questions that arise.

 

 

To complete the certificate you must:

- Attend all Core Curriculum (7 total) & Hands-On Workshops (5 total)

- Attend a minimum of 2 Elective courses (4 offered in 2019, register individually)

- Complete all courses within the 2018-2019 calendar year

Cooking on the Wood Burning Stove

By spring, the food reserves were running low and prairie families were eager for the return of spring and fresh greens. On the wood stove in the McClean Soddy at the Plains Conservation Center, we make a common winter dinner of root vegetable stew, cornbread and apple pie. Recipes and all supplies provided. Appropriate for adults and children ages 12 and up.

Creating a Hobby Greenhouse

Come learn how to take your master outdoor gardening skills to the next level and extend your growing season and increase your green thumb skills. Is the next step in your horticulture experience maintaining a greenhouse? Before building or buying a greenhouse, learn the benefits and the liabilities of owning a greenhouse.

In this class participants will experience everything they ever wanted to know about building or buying a greenhouse, but were afraid to ask. The purpose of this class is to cover the true costs of owning a hobby greenhouse and let participants determine if a greenhouse is really something you really need.

Instructor: Thaddeus Gourd attended New Mexico State University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Pest Management and Horticulture. He earned a Master’s Degree with thesis study in Entomology at New Mexico State University and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology with emphasis on plant parasitic nematodes at North Carolina State University. Thaddeus has worked over 19 years in the private sector of the plant science business and since 2000, has worked at Colorado State University Extension as an Agriculture Agent and Director for Adams County. He has extensive experience of horticulture, gardening, weed science, entomology, plant pathology and greenhouse management and has been involved in the practice of Integrated Pest Management for over 30 years.

Enjoying Nature with Fountain Pens

Using fountain pens is a wonderfully different and relaxing way to write and draw, especially when combined with nature! This course will teach you the basics of using and maintaining a fountain pen. You will also have an opportunity to sample various types of pens, paper and ink to help you decide which you prefer. You’ll even receive a fountain pen and notebook that are yours to keep! Open to all skill levels. Lecture style class with a hands-on portion that allows students to try out different fountain pens, inks and papers.

You can grow food in the mountains! Cord and Penn Parmenter are determined to say ‘yes’ to mountain gardeners. Wind, hail, deer, bears, extreme temperatures -- they’ve heard it all. The Parmenters have been growing organic food at 8,120 ft. elevation since 1992 and their techniques and experiences apply to all of Colorado’s elevations and hardships. The mountains have a long history of providing a large amount of food for the state. This class covers many great foods that thrive in the mountains’ cool weather, wind proof season extenders, hail covers, raised bed preparation, compost options against bears, crop rotation, companion planting, succession planting, vegetables for the shade, mulching, seed saving and more. The popularity of growing roses began thousands of years ago and continues today. The rose growing series offered by American Rose Society Consulting Rosarians and experts from the Denver Rose Society will cover how to grow healthy, easy care beautiful roses for years to come. The series covers secrets to successful rose growing, no pain pruning, versatile shrub roses, fragrant roses, and winter care. Choose one class or take them all and come away with confident rose growing skills and greater appreciation for the “Queen of Flowers.”

Roses grow great in Colorado! Many rose varieties thrive in our region, and can fill your garden with beautiful blooms, color and fragrance. Let one of our experienced rosarians with the Denver Rose Society lead you through the basics of growing roses, how to plant, fertilize and water. Invitation to Ikebana: Contemporary

 

Ikebana is an expression of our respect and appreciation towards nature. We observe life through the arrangement of plants. During each class, participants receive hands-on instruction to put together an arrangement to take home.

This class is an introduction to the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. This will be a hands-on workshop open to all skill levels. The instructor will demonstrate the art form and then the students will proceed to make an arrangement. After creating an arrangement the instructor will do a critique.

In July, we would like to make a Shoka arrangement which could bring coolness of water on a hot summer day. (Pond Scenery-2. Land-and-Water form) Please bring two kenzans and a deep dish-style container with wide opening, if you have.

Instructor: Kazuko Kozai is a Senior Professor of Ikenobo Ikebana School, which is the largest Ikebana school begun in Japan in 1462. She has studied Ikebana for more than 40 years and teaches enthusiastically in the Denver and Boulder area.

Mountain Tomatoes

We all know the tomato is the gate-way drug to gardening, the Holy Grail of the mountains is to grow a red tomato. Technically, the mountains and tomatoes don’t get along and this class explains why.

In 1991, Penn Parmenter was told she could not grow tomatoes in the mountains. Today, she is working with around 200 varieties of tomatoes at 8,120 ft. elevation in the Wet Mountains. Learn about tomato varieties from around the world, especially those grown in high, cold places. Learn how to find and adapt seed, create night-time protection, prepare soil, fight disease and enjoy the fruits of your labor. The world of tomato seed swapping is also explored.

Penn comes armed with high-altitude tomato seeds, plants, demos and tips for reaching success with the tomato. Join the addiction! No more green tomatoes! (Unless it's Green Zebra, or Green Doctors or Evergreen).

Passive Solar Greenhouse Growing

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

Penn and Cord Parmenter have been growing food in their passive solar sustainable greenhouse for 19 years. Their expertise is shared in this class to help take some of the mystery out of something that should be easy and yet can seem so hard. Matching appropriate plants to the microclimates within the greenhouse is crucial. Often the plants are the best teachers in the greenhouse and together participants learn how to work within the unique greenhouse eco-system.

Favorite foods, herbs and flowers are discussed as well as forcing plants for seed production, over wintering potted plants and succession planting for a year round harvest.

The Parmenters share tips for keeping the greenhouse organically under control from bugs and disease. Preventative methods and what to do when an outbreak strikes are discussed.

Penn and Cord lead busy lives with three kids and a business and yet they manage to grow food year round in their greenhouses. When life gets in the way and you’re thinking of turning your greenhouse into a shed, don’t despair because there are answers for successful greenhouse growing.

Photographing Blossoms of Light

Enjoy special early evening access to the Blossoms of Light event and learn how to capture stunning images of holiday displays.

Pickles and Chutney

 

In this hands-on cooking class we will focus on pickle and chutney making. We will review canning safety and techniques of boiling water bath canning, but this class is geared to those who have had some experience with waterbath canning. We will pickle some fruit, some vegetables, and also make chutneys we can use to dress up our barbeque’d meats or liven up a cheese plate. Each student will get at least 3 jars-of pickled vegetable, pickled fruit, and chutney.
