Lisa Weddel AIFD PFCI has been in the floral industry for over 30 years.  She has been active in all areas of the industry from designer, teacher to owner of several businesses. Lisa has a floriculture degree, is an Iowa Master florist, as well as being an accredited member of the American Institute of Floral Designers organization where she currently holds the position of President of the South-Central Chapter.  In addition, Lisa has served on the Board of Trustees of the Professional Floral Communicators International as Chairman.This is an organization under the umbrella of the Society of American Florists.

Past floral accomplishments include designing at the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA for over 16 parades as a designer as well as a team leader. She designed on the floral team for President George W. Bush's 2005 Presidential Inauguration, designed at the 2019 Kentucky Derby and has the same honor this coming May.

 

Laura Tonner has enjoyed working in the floral industry for five years. Her favorite part has been designing for weddings and events, but she has done just about everything in the floral industry. She has experience in retail, deliveries and the day-to-day operations of a small flower shop. All of this has led to her latest endeavor as the co-owner of Designs Inspired by You, the first of its kind floral experience studio.

Laura has a floral certificate from a local design school, won an academic scholarship from FAR (Floral Association of the Rockies) and has attended the Rose Parade as a designer for two years.

Macro/Close Up Photography for DSLR Shooters

Learn about the technical and aesthetic demands of macro photography with a DSLR camera. See different techniques and equipment in use. After an early morning shoot we ll head to the classroom to look at some images and review the gear in more detail.

Outdoor Winter Containers

Perspective Drawing in the Gardens

Learn the basics of depicting objects in space, and one-, two- and three-point perspective. Learn about elliptical and aerial perspective. After classroom instruction, students will move into the gardens to put their new drawing techniques into practice.

Instructor: Mitch Caster teaches drawing at the Art Students League of Denver, and before that, at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. He started his career as a news artist and courtroom illustrator. Mitch now works as a fine artist and shows his paintings in galleries in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

Photography Expeditions at Plains Conservation Center

 

Photography expeditions to the Plains Conservation Center offer opportunities to capture the life and the seasonal characteristics of the prairie in the best light possible. In addition there will be ample time to capture photos of wild and domestic creatures, native plants and historical structures. All photography skill levels are encouraged to attend. The emphasis will be on high dynamic range photography with guidance from David Winger. A tripod is highly recommended along with clothes for protection against possible rain and or cold.

Just about everyone grows a rose bush or two.Congress designated the rose as America s national floral emblem in 1986.The popularity of growing roses began thousands of years ago and continues today.The rose growing series offered by American Rose Society Consulting Rosarians and experts from the Denver Rose Society will cover how to grow healthy, easy care beautiful roses for years to come. The series covers secrets to successful rose growing, no pain pruning, versatile shrub roses, fragrant roses, and winter care. Choose one class or take them all and come away with confident rose growing skills and greater appreciation for the  Queen of Flowers. 

Preparing your roses for winter is the key to growing those fabulous flowers in the spring. Learn why fall and winter care keeps your roses healthy from year to year and how to prepare new rose beds for spring planting. Get tips on early transplanting or rearranging the rose bed. A recommended list of roses that do well along the Front Range and higher altitudes will be included to take home.

Rocky Mountain Horticulture II - ONLINE

Rocky Mountain Gardening Required Course Group I

Rocky Mountain Horticulture II is an introduction to general information on plant management. Each of these four classes will present an overview by an expert from the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service. Topics include the identification and control of lawn and garden weeds, diseases and insects, and integrated pest management.

This session will be held online in a Zoom meeting. Details on how to join the class will be emailed on the first day of the program.

 

Instructor: Thaddeus Gourd attended New Mexico State University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Pest Management and Horticulture. He earned a Master's Degree with thesis study in Entomology at New Mexico State University and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology with emphasis on plant parasitic nematodes at North Carolina State University. Thaddeus has worked over 19 years in the private sector of the plant science business and since 2000, has worked at Colorado State University Extension as an Agriculture Agent and Director for Adams County. He has extensive experience of gardening and greenhouse management and has been involved in the practice of Integrated Pest Management for over 30 years.

Instructor: Blake Burger

Blake Burger's passion for plants began at a young age gardening in Illinois and only grew stronger once he moved to Colorado in 2000 and began hiking in the wilderness areas of Colorado. There, he began to cultivate a great curiosity and appreciation for the diverse flora found along the hiking trails. In 2007, he left his career as a food scientist and worked as a seasonal gardener for Denver Botanic Gardens. After one year, he was hired full time as a horticulturalist. Throughout his years at the Gardens he has worked with tropical plants, native plants, vegetables and herbs. After receiving his Herbalist Certification here in Denver, Blake immediately began working with the vast array of medicinal plants growing in the Gardens. He founded the Denver Medicinal Plant Society in 2015, created and maintains several medicinal plant beds at the Gardens  York Street location, and has laid the foundation for the Gardens  first Herbalist Certificate Program. As a certified yoga instructor, Blake has led more than 1,000 yoga classes over six years and created a nationally recognized yoga program here at the Gardens. Blake believes in a multifaceted approach to health and wellness: eat well, move your body, never stop learning, get outside and connect.

Jeanette Burkle is a commercial and editorial photographer with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and consulting. Since 2003, Jeanette has successfully owned and managed Galie Photography, while designing and delivering seminars on a wide range of photography topics. An award winning-photographer, Jeanette combines an engineering background with a strong artistic sense. With the belief that photography is part art and part science, she strives to use her unique background to produce art that is infused with a creative vision and improved by knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of photography. She has worked with many corporate clients including ExxonMobil, George Mason University, American Red Cross, John Marshall Bank, AmeriChoice, Medtronic, Harris Corporation, and Long & Foster Realty. Jeanette’s work has been honored through the Virginia Professional Photographers Association with such recognition as the highly distinguished Fuji Masterpiece Award and the Kodak Gallery Award.

Scott Dressel-Martin is a principal at Dressel-Martin MediaWorks, Inc. Scott has photographed around the world, including the Middle East, Mongolia, South Africa, Mexico, Spain, Singapore and all around the United States. Currently based in Denver, Colorado Scott began his career in newspaper photojournalism and has been published internationally. He is the official photographer of the Denver Botanic Gardens and also works with a select group of important institutions helping them tell promote their mission and tell relevant and moving stories. Many of Scott’s clients are in the not-for-profit world such as Denver Botanic Gardens, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Denver Health, VISIT Denver. Scott also works with corporate clients such as Level 3, Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Hyatt Hotels and Vail Resorts. Scott is a passionate teacher and speaker on photography and creativity. He has a Master’s from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, New York.

Susan Evans specializes in empowering people to improve their health and lifestyle through herbal and wellness education. Let Susan introduce you to herbs for healing, cooking, gardening and crafting.

Susan has been cultivating and working with herbs for more than 30 years. She managed garden centers and greenhouses in Denver before starting her own organic landscaping business, Flowerscapes, which she owned and operated for 12 years. She has worked as a master gardener and volunteer naturalist for Jefferson County, Colorado.

She has a certificate in advanced clinical herbalism from the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies in Boulder and has over 1,500 hours of clinical study and experience in the uses of medicinal plants. After attaining her certification in 1997, she founded Chrysalis Herbs. Since then, she has devoted herself to sharing her love and knowledge of herbs and gardening, helping people to reconnect with the beauty and healing aspects of the natural world.
