A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins promptly at the schedule start time and lasts 2.5 hours. All summer walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk. Fall and Winter programs are held at Chatfield Farms.

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

 

Special Instructions: All walks begin promptly at the start time and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

All summerprogram locations are at a park near Conifer.

Advanced Bonsai Design - A Performance

Larry Jackel leads a demonstration and discussion of techniques used to develop wild/collected material from the Front Range into bonsai. Three artists from the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society develop the plant material as Larry describes and discusses their work.

  

Presenting Artists:

Todd Schlafer  - Todd is a past president of the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society, was named the 2012 Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society Artist of the Year and is the 2016 winner of Best North American Species Award for his Colorado Blue Spruce at the National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, New York.

Adam Johnson - Adam first studied Bonsai under artist Hal Sasaki, soon after meeting Larry Jackel to become part of the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society. He was named the 2019 Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society Artist of the Year.

Paul Koenning - As an arborist, Paul loves studying tree growth patterns and how specific species respond to environmental conditions. Realizing similarities in growth patterns between differing species guides Paul s approach to styling bonsai and pushing their boundaries. Investigating and understanding how trees respond to environmental conditions, is for Paul, where beauty is captured.

Larry Jackel - Larry saw his first bonsai at the Midwest Show in 1972 and has been actively studying bonsai and acquiring trees ever since. A move to Denver in 1976 connected Larry with the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society, which provided the nurturing necessary for Larry to become proficient in the art and craft of bonsai. Larry chooses trees from the Front Range for bonsai, particularly the ponderosa pine but also the limber pine, bristlecone pine, pinion pine, Douglas fir and the Rocky Mountain juniper. Larry has had the opportunity to teach about these conifers in lectures, demonstrations and workshops across the country. In the spring of 2012, he joined the horticulture staff at Denver Botanic Gardens as its bonsai specialist. He develops and maintains the bonsai collection displayed in the Bill Hosakawa Bonsai Pavilion.

Ayurveda and Vinyasa Yoga: Flow Through the Five Elements of Nature in a Movement Meditation

 

Yoga is the sister science of Ayurveda. By incorporating the Ayurvedic principles of the five elements in the natural world into a yoga practice, this class serves to connect us to our own true nature. The two complementary sciences are combined to create an illuminating and slow-moving meditation with yoga postures that can be modified for all levels. View the healing art of yoga through an Ayurvedic lens with some take-home practices for each season and mind-body type.

Ayurveda Four-Part Series

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga that deals directly with healing the mind and body. Through diet, lifestyle, breathing exercises, herbal medicine and spiritual practices, Ayurveda offers a unique set of tools for individuals to regain balance with their own true nature. Ayurveda is centered on the idea that all beings are a unique composition of the five natural elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which make up the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). Learning how the different doshas function and how they impact the mind and body, you can begin to recognize signs of imbalances early on and implement Ayurvedic practices to bring yourself back to balance.

In this four-part series, each class gives you some examples of what Ayurveda has to offer for your wellness routine. The series begins with an exploration of what the doshas are and how they affect you on an individual level. With that foundational knowledge, the second class is a yoga practice that flows through the five elements and three doshas within all of us to prepare for a blissful resting pose. Receive yoga sequences to take home to continue to practice on your own.

A major concept of Ayurveda is maintaining health through lifestyle protocols and eating seasonally with good food combinations to prevent illness or disturbance to your health. In the third class, explore some herbal remedies prepared in a kitchen for the purpose of preventing disease. In the fourth class, we cook with the six different tastes of Ayurveda and feast together. Take home recipe ideas from the last two classes to keep the exploration going at home.

 

Your Mind-Body Constitution. What Is Your Dosha?

Your dosha is your mind-body type and it is determined by factors such as your genetic makeup and when you were born. This workshop briefly covers the basics of Ayurveda and how to determine your dosha, as well as includes some pranayama (or breath-work) that is balancing for all three doshas.

Past floral accomplishments include designing at the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA for over 16 parades as a designer as well as a team leader.  She designed on the floral team for President George W. Bush's 2005 Presidential Inauguration, designed at the 2019 Kentucky Derby and has the same honor this coming May.

 

Laura Tonner has enjoyed working in the floral industry for five years. Her favorite part has been designing for weddings and events, but she has done just about everything in the floral industry. She has experience in retail, deliveries and the day-to-day operations of a small flower shop. All of this has led to her latest endeavor as the co-owner of Designs Inspired by You, the first of its kind floral experience studio.

Laura has a floral certificate from a local design school, won an academic scholarship from FAR (Floral Association of the Rockies) and has attended the Rose Parade as a designer for two years.

Lecture - Beauty from Blight: The Flower House

 

In October 2015, 37 floral designers and more than 100 volunteers from across North America came together to fill an abandoned Detroit house with American-grown fresh flowers and living plants. An estimated 3,400 curious visitors explored the house over the three-day exhibition. Why did this project touch so many people? In this lecture, botanical installation artist Lisa Waud describes her extraordinary project from idea to exhibition, discussing what about the installation was so magnetic to so many people across the worldåxploring her thoughts on beauty blight and nostalgia, as well as the themes of risk-taking, logistics and collaboration through the lens of the large-scale installation.

 

Lisa Waud

Based in Detroit, Michigan, botanical installation artist Lisa Waud's large-scale, multi-sensory, exploratory works utilize living plants and cut flowers, exploring themes of old and new, nature as a cleansing reset and joy from beauty. Lisa is committed to producing art events that are pointedly inclusive for collaborators and spectators and accessible to all humans, with a focus on celebrating the beauty of underrepresented and marginalized people. Lisa's biophilic projects have been featured in the New York Times, Huffington Post, Martha Stewart, Hyperallergic, Colossal, Designboom, The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post and Travel + Leisure. She has lectured at TEDxDETROIT, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Cranbook Art Museum, Broad Museum, The Henry Ford Museum, the Cleveland botanic garden, Intermittent Tech Conference and The Slow Flowers Summit.

Lecture – The Kitchen Mycologist

This illustrated presentation by Eugenia Bone explains basic mycology through the lens of the kitchen, covering how mushrooms grow, why some mushrooms are only collected in the wild, and why cultivated and wild types taste so different. It delves into the various lifestyles of fungi, the impact fungi have on healthy gardens and crops, all about truffles, mushroom nutrition and poisoning. A great talk for beginners!

 

Eugenia Bone is a nationally known nature and food writer and author. Her work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Saveur, Food & Wine, and Gourmet. A member of the American Society of Science Writers and former president of the New York Mycological Society, Eugenia has lectured widely in venues such as the New York Public Library, and has been a guest on radio programs and podcasts, most recently on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “To The Best of Our Knowledge” and Mushroom Revival’s podcast “Mushrooms and Microbes with Eugenia Bone.” She is a member of the faculty at the New York Botanical Garden where she teaches classes on microbial ecology, psychedelic mushrooms, mycology and food preservation.

Preserving Mushrooms

Mushroom Preservation explores all the primary techniques used in preparing for preservation and preserving mushrooms, explaining the challenges home preservers face preserving wild products and the particularities of mushroom preservation in general.
