2019-2020 Homeschool Days Package

Homeschool Days offer families the opportunity to explore plant-based themes through a variety of hands-on activities, tours and take-home projects that families can do together. Activities are designed for children ages five and up, however all ages are welcome to attend.

 

Plants 101: Root to Seed - August 26, 2019 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Journey from root to seed as you examine plants up-close. Discover the structure and function of the five major plant parts as you dissect plants and explore plant diversity. Plant a house plant cutting to take home with you.

 

Tree-Mendous Trees - October 1, 2019 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Explore the tree-mendous world of trees at Denver Botanic Gardens. Become a tree detective as you learn basic tree identification skills, discover the story told by a tree’s rings and investigate why leaves change color in the fall.

 

Rainforest - January 27, 2020 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Explore your way through the rainforest, its products, diversity and treasures. Discover the layers of the rainforest, how chocolate is made and the unique adaptations that plants in the rainforest have to help them survive.

 

Be a Botanist - February 24, 2020 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Spend a day in the boots of a botanist and investigate plants like a scientist. Discover how plants are classified, examine herbarium specimens, and design an experiment as you get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the things a botanist might do.

 

Nature's Art - March 16, 2020 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Join us for a day of creating, designing and crafting. Learn how nature’s colors, shapes and patterns inspire works of art as you spend the day investigating natural dyes, discovering hidden mathematical patterns and creating one-of-a-kind works of art.

 

Register for all 5 Homeschool Days offered August 2019 through March 2020, and receive a $10 savings over the individual price.

Family Workshop: Pollination Exploration!

What do bees, beetles, bats and birds have in common? They all help our plants grow! Join us as we observe pollinators and learn about the process of pollination. Create a pollinator habitat to take home with you.

Workshops offer families a hands-on opportunity to learn about the science and enchantment behind the plants in our everyday lives, create tasty treats from scratch and explore the natural world. Classes are designed for families with children ages 5-10.

All adults attending the workshop must register for the program. Non-participating siblings do not participate in the activities.

Price: $12 non-member adult, $10 member adult; $17 non-member child, $15 member child

Home on the Range: The Story of a Prairie Farm

Presented and managed by the City of Aurora

Get ready to step back in time when visiting the prairie sod home village at the Plains Conservation Center. Enjoy a wagon ride and light snack while touring an 1800s-style sod village, then interact with and feed our resident farm animals. Learn how early settlers survived life on the prairie, including how they got their food and endured the many hardships of homesteading.

This program take place Wednesdays - Sundays from 3-4 p.m.

The City of Aurora Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department's mission is to encourage active lifestyles and create healthy environments for people, nature and community.

Human | Nature: Figures from the Craig Ponzio Sculpture Collection Tour

Human | Nature: Figures from the Craig Ponzio Sculpture Collection presents sculptures that explore the human form in both classical and abstract styles, from the early 20th century to today. Featured artists hail from around the world and include Eric Fischl, Jacques Lipchitz, Sassona Norton, Beverly Pepper, Auguste Rodin, and Manolo Valdés.

From sculpture to selfies to dance, the power of the human figure conveys and conjures a range of emotions. Human | Nature shares the expressive capacity of the human form against the backdrop of the Gardens’ diverse botanical environments.

Explore the sculptures with a docent who can share information about the artists and their styles as well as stories behind the sculptures.

 

Price: $14, $12 member, $10 student

 

Special instructions: Tours are outdoors; dress accordingly for the weather. Water, sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended. Please bring booking confirmation. Meet guide in the lobby of the Boettcher Memorial Center after entering through the Gardens main entrance.

Lavender Festival

More than 2,000 lavender plants set the scene for this family-friendly celebration of Chatfield Farms' Lavender Garden.

 

Lavender products made by local growers and artisans are available for purchase.

Enjoy free demonstrations and live music.

Enjoy a variety of food, dessert and drink vendors.

Educational programs on lavender and related topics are available for an additional charge. Seats are limited and advance registration is highly recommended.

Walk-ups for classes are welcome if the class is not sold out.

Tour Chatfield Farms--tours are free, however capped at 25 participants per tour.

Artists are present during the festival, creating and selling paintings and pottery.

 

 

Lavender Festival - Anti-Aging, Lavender-Inspired Herbal Skincare

Learn how to craft simple recipes for an anti-aging skincare routine including cleansing, nourishing and protecting this delicate organ. In this demonstration class, we cover facial cleansers, body butters, facial serums, hydrating creams, herbal baths, herbal infusions and much more. Explore the various ingredients of all-natural skincare, including carrier oils, essential oils, natural preservatives and plants including weeds found in your backyard.

Make an herbal facial steam, lip balm and facial serum to take home, along with recipes.

Instructor:

Tara Rae is a local permaculture teacher and designer, ecologist and backyard herbalist who collects and crafts teas, tinctures and tonics in her kitchen. She loves to identify and preserve a variety of plants for personal vitality, including food and medicine.

 

 

Lavender Festival - Chatfield Farms Gardens and Historical Tour

Come and see the newly renovated gardens and learn about the history of Chatfield Farms. Our property has a rich history of pioneering and farming in Colorado that started long before Denver Botanic Gardens managed the land. Tours begin in the Colorado Native Plant Garden, continuing through Hildebrand Ranch, the Prairie Garden, the new Riparian Demonstration Garden and conclude in the Lavender Garden.

The one-hour tour is led by two Chatfield Farms horticulturists who share history, garden details and answer questions along the way.

Dress appropriately for walking and sun exposure. Please meet in front of the Hildebrand Ranch house.

This tour is free, but will be capped at 25 participants. It will display sold out here if it fills before the time of the event.

 

Lavender Festival - Cooking With Lavender

Learn how to use this aromatic herb in everything from desserts to cocktails, infused salts and sugars, vinegars and sauces. Discover how to keep your dishes from tasting like a bowl of potpourri. Take home a sample of Herbes de Provence seasoning blend to get you started and snack on some delicious lavender shortbread cookies and lavender lemonade while we explore the culinary uses of this lovely plant. Recipes included.

Take a closer look at food production at Chatfield Farms. We will explore the Market Garden and discuss small scale farming at a public garden. The tour will also cover the historical ranch area, the herb garden, cutting garden and farm animals.

Special Instructions: This is a 45 minute walking tour around the Hildebrand Ranch. Please bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and wear comfortable shoes. Meet in front of the Hildebrand Ranch house.

Lavender Festival - Growing Lavender in Your Landscape

In this class, students will learn all about growing lavender in your garden. This class will explore the different attributes of the different species and cultivars that we can grow in the Rocky Mountains and high desert. We will explore how to maintain your plant to encourage long life, review watering, and pruning and growing requirements. Learn how to incorporate lavender in a xeriscape garden and which plants compliment lavender. Each student will go home with their own lavender plant, hand sickle, and growing guide.

Owner of Sage Creations Organic Farm, Paola Legarre has worked in organic farming and marketing for the last 25 years. In looking to continue Paola’s commitment to organic farming and raising her family in Colorado’s clean air and wholesome way of life, her and her family moved to Palisade in 2005.

Paola’s first lavender planting was in 2006. As her lavender fields grew, she extended her product line to include certified organic essential oil, bath and body products, and lavender plant starts. Sage Creations currently has 5 acres in lavender production and grows 3 species and 50 different cultivars of lavender. Paola manages the farm and maintains lavender fields, medicinal herb crops, heirloom vegetables and a cherry orchard by using sustainable farming practices; nourishing soil life, not using herbicides or synthetic fertilizers and encouraging the beneficial insects through diversified plant hedge rows, companion planting and insect releases.

A member fob allows you to gain access through the Cheesman Gate. Fobs may only be purchased and used by active members of the Gardens. This is an added benefit of membership for all levels. Non­-members or lapsed members may not purchase or renew fobs unless a membership is also processed at the time of the transaction. By purchasing a fob, you agree to take responsibility for any misuse. A membership fob fee is $25. Entry is limited to the number of people you are normally allowed with your membership. Fobs must be renewed annually.

Prairie Homestead Self-Guided Tour

Presented and Managed by the City of Aurora

Join us at the Plains Conservation Center for a self-guided tour of our historical sod village and tipis. See what a Native American tipi camp might have looked like in the early 1800s. Immerse yourself in a replication of an 1880s prairie homestead village with authentic artifacts and, depending on the season, real farm animals.

Please Note: All guests must check in at the PCC Visitor Center with purchase confirmation prior to beginning self-guided tour in order to receive site condition updates and the actual self-guided brochure.

Seedlings: 2019 Fall Series Package

Register for all 15 classes offered September through December, and receive a $30 savings over the individual price.

Seedlings classes offer a fun, hands-on way for young children, ages 18 months to six years, to explore the plant world while developing an understanding and appreciation for plants and their importance. Classes include interactive explorations, nature walks, and stories for children and their caregivers.

You will need to choose a date and time for each of the 15 classes. Please keep in mind that classes are offered for three different age groups and are modified to fit the developmental needs of each group. Please select the session appropriate for your child's age.
