A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins promptly at the schedule start time and lasts 2.5 hours. All summer walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk. Fall and Winter programs are held at Chatfield Farms.

Price: $30, $25 member

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

Special Instructions: All walks begin promptly at the start time and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

All summer program locations are near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver.

All October - March program dates take place outdoors at Denver Botanic Gardens' Chatfield Farms, located at 8500 W Deer Creek Canyon Road, Littleton, CO 80128.

Invitation to Ikebana: Traditional

Ikebana is an expression of our respect and appreciation towards nature. We observe life through the arrangement of plants. During each class, participants receive hands-on instruction to put together an arrangement to take home.

Shoka (or Seika, depending on each Ikebana school) is today's name for original "Ikebana" style which started in Japan in the early 17th century. Shoka expresses the life and the beauty of plants in nature.

We will make a Shoka arrangement to show a deepening autumn feeling.

Price: $44, $39 member

Instructor: Kazuko Kozai is a Senior Professor of Ikenobo Ikebana School, which is the largest Ikebana school begun in Japan in 1462. She has studied Ikebana for more than 40 years and teaches enthusiastically in the Denver and Boulder area.

Special Instructions:

Students are encouraged to bring their own Ikebana container (vase) and a large Kenzan (Pin-frog, 3.5" diameter or larger) as well as garden clippers (or Ikebana scissors) so that they can take home their finished arrangement. The Kenzan and Ikebana vase can be reused for future arrangements again and again for years. Container, Kenzan, and scissors will be lent during the class for those who don't bring their own.

Literature of the Land Book Club - Fall

Join us for the Fall 2019 session of Literature of the Land, a book club series hosted by the Helen Fowler Library. We’ll read three books over three months, focusing on a specific topic of interest. This fall we will be discussing farmland in America. What does it mean to farm, and how can we sustainably feed a nation? Learn if we can harvest while addressing issues of chemical waste, loss of topsoil, and the ever-changing landscape of corporate agriculture from the experiences of family farms and land workers who care about what they grow from soil to seed.

Starting in September, we will discuss This Blessed Earth by Ted Genoways. October will bring us to Farming for the Long Haul by Michael Foley, and we’ll wrap up in November with Lentil Underground by Liz Carlisle.
