Family Workshop at Plains Conservation Center: Be a Homesteader

Learn about how homesteading families lived on the plains in the 1800's and make a homestead craft together.

Family Workshops at Plains Conservation Center offer families a fun, hands-on guided opportunity to learn about the prairie and the people, plants and animals that live or have lived on the prairie. Workshops include a guided exploration of the topic and a project for adults and children to create together. This workshop is designed for families with children ages 4-10.

Price:  $12 per person

Location: Plains Conservation Center, 21901 E. Hampden Avenue, Aurora, CO 80013

Registration Instructions: Pre-registration is required. Program registration will not be available onsite. Due to social distancing and group size restrictions you must register all members of your party ages 3 and up.

The following safety procedures and requirements are in place for attending onsite classes during COVID-19:

All adults and children ages 3 and older are required to wear a mask.

Class sizes are reduced to follow social distancing protocols. Materials used during the program will not be shared between participant groups and will be disinfected between each use.

Family Workshop at Plains Conservation Center: Creepy Crawlers and Spooky Critters

Learn about some critters like snakes and spiders, and do some exploration and crafting together in Halloween.

Come meet the birds of the Colorado prairie! Learn about birds through scavenger hunts, hiking in the shortgtass, and dissecting an owl pellet.

Audience: Families with children ages 5-12

Find out what it was like to live in a sod house in the 1880s! Explore our replica sod village, compare artifacts from then and now, and make you own homestead toy to bring home with you.

Guided Homeschool Exploration at Plains Conservation Center: The Cheyenne

Join us to learn about the Cheyenne and how utilized the natural resources to survive on the prairie in the 1800s. Explore our replica Cheyenne tipi camp with a guide, discover how the Cheyenne made items for their homes from parts of the bison, and create something using the prairie plants to take home with you.

Audience: Families with children ages 5-12

Homeschool Investigations: Flavors Around the World

Have you ever wondered about the origins of some of your favorite flavors? Become a detective as we investigate cultural food influences and trace the origins of our favorite flavors from around the globe.

 

Homeschool Investigations offer families a hands-on guided opportunity to learn about the science and importance of plants. These hour-long programs are designed to engage both adults and children together through a variety of investigative garden explorations, games and activities.

 

Audience: Families with children ages 7-12

Are all fruits sweet? Are all vegetables savory? Join us as we learn about the botanical anatomy of the produce we eat. Investigate how your sense of smell, sight and touch affect your sense of taste. This program includes a tasting component.

We all know eating lots of fruits and vegetables is good for us. But have you ever wondered why? Join us as we explore the benefits of eating a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables though hands on activities, games and explorations. Investigate nutrients, vitamins and colorful phytochemicals that make fruits and vegetables healthy food choices.

Pumpkin Patch: Guided Family Exploration

Kick off fall with a fun family exploration at Chatfield Farms! Navigate the pumpkin patch and mini corn maze in a small group led by a Denver Botanic Gardens instructor. Investigate signs of fall and pick the perfect mini pumpkin to take home. Recommended for families with children ages 4-12, but all ages welcome.

60-minute program. Select Thursdays in September and October, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Price: $8 per child, $6 per member child, $8 per adult, $6 per member adult (includes admission to Chatfield Farms plus 1 mini pumpkin per registrant. In October additional pumpkins may be purchased onsite.)
