A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of forest bathing (shinrin-yoku). Bathe in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones. You will move slowly and mindfully through the forest as you are guided through a series of invitations to engage your senses for closer connection with the surrounding nature. The walk begins promptly at the schedule start time and lasts 2.5 hours. All summer walk locations will be near the foothills, within about a one hour drive or less from Denver. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk. Fall and Winter programs are held at Chatfield Farms.

Instructor: Leona Campbell

Leona is a professional photographer and owner of Wind in Pines LLC, which provides public and private forest bathing walks in the greater Denver area. Leona is a certified forest therapy guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

 

Special Instructions: All walks begin promptly at the start time and will last 2.5 hours. This is not a hike. Participants will move slowly and mindfully, covering about 1/2 mile over the course of the walk. Detailed information about location will be emailed out about a week before the walk.

All summer program locations are at a park near Conifer.

Ayurveda and Vinyasa Yoga: Flow Through the Five Elements of Nature in a Movement Meditation ONLINE

 

Ayurveda is a traditional form of medicine in India. There are many ways it can supplement our own wellness journeys and assist us in being more connected with nature and our own true selves. The guiding principle of Ayurveda is that everything in the natural world, including ourselves, is comprised of the five natural elements, earth, water, fire, air and space. By understanding the qualities of these elements and their characteristics, we can begin to see how they are present within us and what we need to balance them and achieve wellness.

This 90-minute class will begin with a presentation on the theories of Ayurveda and what the doshas (mind-body types) are. Then, we will incorporate those principles in a yoga practice. Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga and the two are combined to create an illuminating and slow-moving meditation with yoga postures that can be modified for all levels. By incorporating the Ayurvedic principles of the five elements in the natural world into a yoga practice, this class serves to connect us to our own true nature. View yoga through an Ayurvedic lens and take with you the understanding you need to incorporate Ayurveda into your own daily and seasonal routines.

Farnosh was a long time student and teacher of yoga before turning to the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda, for help in healing after the birth of her first child. What she learned in those transformational months led her to a life guided by the principles of Ayurveda for herself and her family. She has studied with many teachers of yoga, ayurveda, and sanskrit including Dr. Vasant Lad, Shiva Rea, Sonia Massoco, Maria Garre, Patricia Wickman, and Dr. Bharat Vaidya. She holds an MA in organic chemistry from UCLA and a BA in environmental chemistry from Columbia University.

Special Instructions: You will need a notebook to take notes, a yoga mat or towel, a yoga block or a couple of books stacked on top of each and a blanket or pillow.

 

Ayurveda Four-Part Series

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga that deals directly with healing the mind and body. Through diet, lifestyle, breathing exercises, herbal medicine and spiritual practices, Ayurveda offers a unique set of tools for individuals to regain balance with their own true nature. Ayurveda is centered on the idea that all beings are a unique composition of the five natural elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which make up the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha). Learning how the different doshas function and how they impact the mind and body, you can begin to recognize signs of imbalances early on and implement Ayurvedic practices to bring yourself back to balance.

In this four-part series, each class gives you some examples of what Ayurveda has to offer for your wellness routine. The series begins with an exploration of what the doshas are and how they affect you on an individual level. With that foundational knowledge, the second class is a yoga practice that flows through the five elements and three doshas within all of us to prepare for a blissful resting pose. Receive yoga sequences to take home to continue to practice on your own.

A major concept of Ayurveda is maintaining health through lifestyle protocols and eating seasonally with good food combinations to prevent illness or disturbance to your health. In the third class, explore some herbal remedies prepared in a kitchen for the purpose of preventing disease. In the fourth class, we cook with the six different tastes of Ayurveda and feast together. Take home recipe ideas from the last two classes to keep the exploration going at home.

 

Your Mind-Body Constitution. What Is Your Dosha?

Your dosha is your mind-body type and it is determined by factors such as your genetic makeup and when you were born. This workshop briefly covers the basics of Ayurveda and how to determine your dosha, as well as includes some pranayama (or breath-work) that is balancing for all three doshas.

Explore the common spices and herbs found in most kitchens and how they can be used for remedies and incorporated into your daily diet to address imbalances. Sample some concoctions that are suitable for each dosha. Class concludes with meditation tools that you can use at home.

Bilingual Yoga

 

Cultivate presence through breath-linking movements in this vinyasa yoga class cued in both English and Spanish. Cues will be the same in both languages, and those familiar with yoga will find a common language through the traditional Sanskrit names of the poses. This flowing, dynamic class is beneficial for all practitioners, and teaches important foundations while leaving space for more advanced practitioners to play.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction- Onsite and Online

The foundation of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the cultivation of mindfulness – clear, non-judgmental attention to the present moment – with regard to the ongoing experience of body, feelings, emotions, and mind. MBSR studies reveal its power to reduce medical symptoms and psychological stress while enhancing the health and well-being of program participants.

Designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., MBSR consists of 8 weekly sessions and a one-day silent retreat. Various mindfulness tools are learned and practiced in a group context and continued between class sessions.

Instructor: Janet Solyntjes, MA, has taught meditation and body awareness disciplines since 1984. She teaches Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in both non-profit and corporate settings internationally and is the co-founder of The Center for Courageous Living. Janet is an Adjunct Professor at Naropa University, a senior teacher for Shambhala International, and leads residential meditation programs at retreat centers in the US and Canada.

Practicing vinyasa yoga on a daily basis can improve posture, flexibility, and endurance. Beyond the physical benefits, yoga helps to bring a sense of clarity to challenging situations in life, reminds us to stay present and focused in an ever-changing environment, and can help us find happiness and contentment in our surroundings.

Join Denver Botanic Gardens' horticultural therapists from your home or office as we share techniques used in the Therapeutic Horticulture program. Engage your senses as we guide you in how to connect with plants in your everyday life.

All ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Only one registration is needed per streaming device. Advanced registration required.

Details on how to join the program streamed live through Vimeo will be emailed 30 minutes before the start of the program. Program time is 2 p.m. Mountain Time.

 

August 13: Taking the Tropics Home

Join Conservatory Horticulturist Nicholas Giaquinto for a session focusing on tropical houseplants. Learn about basic care for houseplants, how to repot your overgrown plants, and propagation methods to use at home to expand your collection.

 

August 27: Virtual Meditative Plant Walk at the Gardens

Learn to walk mindfully among plants. Pause to engage with plants and connect with different physical sensations, isolating the senses to feel the temperature of the air and the warmth of the sun, tune into sounds and scents, and take in the abundance of life all around that we are sometimes too busy to notice. This is also an opportunity to see what is blooming in August at our Chatfield Botanic Gardens location.

Vinyasa, Violins and Vino

Yoga with a twist. Enjoy vinyasa yoga, live violin music and a picnic! Relax in nature as Blake Burger, certified instructor and Gardens’ horticulturist, leads an hour-long class in the Gardens. Conclude the evening with a bring your own picnic and music performance. BYOB wine and beer is permitted.

Musician: Brittany Erickson is a classical violinist living in Denver, Colorado. She has performed chamber music and orchestral works across the country including with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Curtis Institute, and the Harvard University Orchestra. By day, Brittany is an educator who supports school districts to design innovative new schools, and in her spare time, she can be found enjoying the Colorado mountains or tending her vegetable garden with her partner, John.
