Join Denver Botanic Gardens in a virtual screening of The Biggest Little Farm with a post screening panel discussion with local Colorado Farmers.

 

The Biggest Little Farm chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. Through dogged perseverance and embracing the opportunity provided by nature's conflicts, the Chesters unlock and uncover a biodiverse design for living that exists far beyond their farm, its seasons and our wildest imagination. Featuring breathtaking cinematography, captivating animals, and an urgent message to heed Mother Nature's call, The Biggest Little Farm provides us all a vital blueprint for better living and a healthier planet.

 

How it works: Denver Botanic Gardens will provide a password protected link on Wednesday (8/12) at 5 p.m. to stream this film at home. This link will be active for 24-hours. Then join us Thursday (8/13) for a panel discussion moderated by Brien Darby, Manager of Urban Food Programs, talking with our group of panelists about their experiences farming on the Front Range.

Brien Darby is Manager of Urban Food Programs at Denver Botanic Gardens. In addition to overseeing the community garden plots at the Gardens, Brien is a member of the Urban Food Initiatives team, which partners with local agencies, such as Denver Housing Authority and Denver Human Services, to provide growing opportunities and farm stands for many residents in the Denver area. Brien also oversees a farmer-in-training program for adult learners interested in starting their own farm businesses.

 

Zephrine Hanson is founder of Hampden Farms, a suburban farming project focused on sustainable farming solutions, organic production and small-batch products made from locally grown and conscientiously sourced natural ingredients. She is a graduate of the Chatfield Farms Veterans Farm Program and is one of the farmers at Chatfield Farms. Zephrine is currently urban farming on a quarter acre with her husband of 21 years and three tweens. She continues to share how her experience with farming has been a therapeutic aspect in her life. She also leads the wellness portion of the Veterans to Farm program and collaborates with food sovereignty organizations to support self-reliance and community resilience from the ground up.

 

Paul Fleisher was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has a master’s degree in education. Through travel, Paul developed a love for food which turned into Fleisher Family Farm that began as a quarter acre, 10-person CSA where they taught homesteading classes and host farm to table dinners. The farm has flourished into a thriving 2-acre, 90-person CSA full of flowers, chickens, ducks and bees. Paul’s long journey of self-education and learning from others in the field has turned his “side hustle” into his life’s work.
