Botany in a Box Family Activity Kit: Create a Plant Press

Become a botanist in your own home as you create a plant press to preserve flowers and leaves. Use your preserved plant specimens to create an herbarium collection or create beautiful dried flower and leaf artwork!

 

Botany in a Box Family Activity Kits provide families the opportunity to take hands on learning into the comfort of their own homes! Each Activity Kit includes background information, project instructions and materials needed to complete an activity or exploration at home.

 

Audience: Families with children ages 5 and up.

 

Kit Fee: $20.00 per kit, $18.00 per kit member; kit fee includes shipping

 

Create a Plant Press Kit includes:

- Materials and hardware needed to create a 6" x 6" hardwood plant press

- Paint to decorate your plant press

- Mini collection notebook

- Plant identification labels

- Pollinator seeds pack

- Information sheet and activity instructions to guide your exploration

 

Shipping Information: Botany in a Box orders are processed on Mondays and Thursdays. Orders placed Thursday 9 a.m. - Monday 9 a.m. are processed on Mondays. Family Make and Take: Dia de los Muertos Miniature Ofrendas

Explore the cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos as you create a miniature ofrenda in remembrance of a loved one. Ofrendas are an important element of the Día de los Muertos celebration and are often constructed and displayed in homes to remember and honor loved ones who have passed. Families are encouraged to bring a photo copy of loved ones to include in their ofrenda. Materials provided are appropriate for children ages 5 and up. Preregistration is required.

 

Family Make and Take programs offer a space for children and their grownups to connect with natural materials and create together. These self-guided and self-paced programs are designed to provide a creative environment that sparks imagination. The Gardens provides the space and supplies. You and your family provide the ideas and creativity!

 

Price: $15 per project fee non-members; $12 per project fee members. Each project fee includes one miniature ofrenda base/platform and access to a variety materials to use for decoration.

 

Program Location: Weather depending, this program will take place outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, you have the choice of working in our indoor space or picking up the materials to take home with you.

 

The following safety procedures and requirements are in place for attending onsite classes during COVID-19:

• All adults and children ages 3 and older are required to wear a mask.

• Class sizes are reduced to follow social distancing protocols. Materials used during the program will not be shared between participant groups and will be disinfected between each use.

Family Make and Take: Harvest Wreaths

Embrace the changing seasons and create a seasonal wreath using autumnal colors, seed pods and artificial foliage. After you complete your wreath, explore the Gardens on your own with a self-guided scavenger hunt that examines how plants get ready for winter.

 

Family Make and Take programs offer a space for children and their grownups to connect with natural materials and create together. These self-guided and self-paced programs are designed to provide a creative environment that sparks imagination. The Gardens provides the space and supplies. You and your family provide the ideas and creativity!

 

Program Location: Weather depending, this program will take place outdoors. In the event of weather that prohibits the conformable use of our outdoor spaces, you have the choice of working in our indoor workspace or taking the materials home with you to complete your project.

 

Audience: Materials provided are appropriate for families with children ages 5 and up.

Create a seasonal wreath using wintry colors, pinecones, evergreen boughs and more! After you complete your wreath, bundle up and stroll around the Gardens with a scavenger hunt that explores the common varieties of evergreens onsite.

Learn about some critters like snakes and spiders, and do some exploration and crafting together in Halloween.

Find out what it was like to live in a sod house in the 1880s! Explore our replica sod village, compare artifacts from then and now, and make you own homestead toy to bring home with you.

Explore how winter looks at the Gardens. Take a walk through the trees and learn more about our favorite evergreens. Along with being the perfect homes for wildlife, explore what makes an evergreen special. Finish your exploration by building your own wreath to take home! This program is a self-guided experience.
