Workshops:

Succulent! Capturing Cacti in Pencil and Gouache

Take your pencil skills to the next level. During a private tour through the garden learn about the botanical attributes that make succulents unique in the plant world. Observe and sketch cacti and succulents using a variety of techniques to record size, form, color, and details. Back on your drafting table, hone your skills with demonstration that targets techniques to portray needles, spines and ridges, as well as the smooth flesh of succulents. If you are working with gouache, achieve the range of greens and undertones often seen in these plants. Experiment with new techniques and materials and learn from demonstrations and individual guidance as you create a finished botanical work.

El Charco del Ingenio and Posada Corazon, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuoto, Mexico

December 3-5, 9 a.m.  1:30 p.m.

Instructor: Randy Raak

Drawing on Tradition: Frida Kahlo's Botanicals

The femininity, grace and strength of Frida Kahlo resonates in her self-portraits. Whether it's the saturated colors or her pre-Columbian jewelry, outrageous pets, and glorious tropical and fruit, she is an artist whose work will endure.

Using mixed media to emulate her iconic style, we will surround portraits of ourselves (or a loved one!) with the flora of Mexico using paint and embroidery. We will use a photo transfer method for the portrait component - no drawing or painting required.
