A Guided Walk - Forest Bathing

Experience the relaxing practice of shinrin-yoku, also known as forest bathing. Shinrin-yoku involves “bathing” in the atmosphere of the forest through mindful engagement of all of the senses. Studies suggest that a regular practice of forest bathing may be associated with a reduction in blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones. Over the course of the walk, your guide will lead you through a series of invitations to engage your senses and bring you into closer connection with the nature that surrounds you.

Instructor: Leona Campbell is a professional photographer and certified Forest Therapy Guide, through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT).

A Healthy Endocrine System

 Adaptogen  is a term coined by Russian scientists in the 1960s and refers to botanicals that have been used for centuries to increase vitality and the capacity to endure life's stressors. In this class we discuss the basic anatomy of function of the endocrine system, the vast array of detrimental effects of stress on health, and the efficacy and safety of five well known adaptogens and how best to use them for optimal health and longevity. This is a lecture style class that includes sampling a variety of different herbal remedies prepared from the five herbs.

Garden Planning 101… where do I start?

This beginner’s class will take you step by step through the process of laying out a plan of attack for your garden! Whether you are starting with a blank slate garden or working with an old outdated garden this class will give you the basics on where to start. It will discuss needs and planning tools for raised beds, container gardens and in-ground vegetable gardens. We will discuss the basics of garden locations, sun requirements, water needs, starting from seed, transplanting and the basics of planning the organization of perennials and annuals, trees and shrubs. This class is the perfect fit for anyone needing to understand how the garden works together as a whole.

 

Soils 101

Soils will always be the first place to start when building a beautiful garden. This class will cover the best management practices for building your soil for in-ground beds, containers and raised beds. It will discuss the basics of composting as well as demonstrate the value of soil testing.

 

Beginning Vegetable Gardening

If you have never planted edible plants or had little success at growing your own vegetables, Brien will walk you through the ABCs from planning, soil preparation, crop selection, watering, fertilizing, pest protection, and harvesting your first vegetable garden. Brien will cover tips on the most popular vegetables to grow, including leafy salad greens, tomatoes, squash, peppers, and more. You'll leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to successfully do each gardening task, and take home a planting guide that will help you through the entire growing season.

 

Annuals and Perennials for Color in the Garden

Plants provide the backbone of the garden with vibrant colors, textures, and forms that weave together to create your own personal oasis. Learn the basics of perennials, annuals and biennials, how to make the best selections for your garden and how to best maintain your plants throughout the season. From the traditional to the unusual we will explore the limitless varieties of plants and send you into the growing season prepared.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of plant extracts and oils to encourage health and wellness of the mind, body and spirit. Learn the basics of aromatherapy, safety and precautions and blending techniques using a variety of essential oils. In addition, herbalist Blake Burger discusses the ancient practice of smoke remedies, covering plants and herbs such as frankincense and myrrh, palo santo, copal and sage.

Blake Burger s passion for plants began at a young age gardening in Illinois and only grew stronger once he moved to Colorado in 2000 and began hiking in the wilderness areas of Colorado. There, he began to cultivate a great curiosity and appreciation for the diverse flora found along the hiking trails. In 2007, he left his career as a food scientist and worked as a seasonal gardener for Denver Botanic Gardens. After one year, he was hired full time as a horticulturalist. Throughout his years at the Gardens he has worked with tropical plants, native plants, vegetables and herbs. After receiving his Herbalist Certification here in Denver, Blake immediately began working with the vast array of medicinal plants growing in the Gardens. He founded the Denver Medicinal Plant Society in 2015, created and maintains several medicinal plant beds at the Gardens  York Street location, and has laid the foundation for the Gardens  first Herbalist Certificate Program. As a certified yoga instructor, Blake has led more than 1,000 yoga classes over six years and created a nationally recognized yoga program here at the Gardens. Blake believes in a multifaceted approach to health and wellness: eat well, move your body, never stop learning, get outside and connect.

Kimberly has spent the last 19 years cultivating her love and passion for the natural world and sharing it with others. In addition to being a clinical herbalist, Kim is also a certified massage therapist, aromatherapist and licensed esthetician. She practices many different modalities including Mayan abdominal massage, Mayan tradition spiritual healing, Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, lymph drainage massage, neuromuscular massage, cupping, Gua sha, cranial sacral therapy, Thai massage for the table, Ashi-atsu barefoot massage, and Ashi Thai are among the many bodywork methods that she practices. Kimberly adds a spiritual healing style to each of her treatments.  She uses an intuitive approach to help gently unwind the tissue and bring the body into balance. She loves beauty and skincare and offers facials, dermaplane, microdermabrasion and waxing. Beautiful Skin Using Herbs

This class cultivates an understanding of the skin from a holistic approach. We explore skin conditions from acne to wounds and talk about our plant allies that soothe and deeply nourish the skin. We learn how to use demulcent herbs for irritated or inflamed tissue. Students also discover astringent herbs and their tissue-healing effects. Learn how to make an oatmeal scrub for face to create a self-indulgent spa experience at home.

Ouch! Bruises, cuts, burns and infections can happen to your skin suddenly and the trauma can linger. In this class, we explore anatomy & physiology of the skin to gain familiarity with patterns of health and trauma. Learn about key herbs and herbal remedies to support conditions like cuts, bruises, scrapes, infections, burns, inflammation, sprains, strains, fractures, breaks and more! Sample and create herbal remedies such as poultices and liniments, as well as learn to how grow or forage for skin-healing herbs for first aid. Make a lavender witch hazel liniment to take home and prepare dandelion and peppermint tinctures as well.

Beginning Bonsai

Are you mystified by the many centuries old Japanese tradition of bonsai? Join us for an entertaining and informative class with nationally recognized bonsai masters Harold Sasaki and Larry Jackel as they debunk the myths, fictions and misconceptions surrounding this living art form. Each participant receives a tree, ceramic pot, wire, soil and gravel in this hands-on experience of creating a finished bonsai, which you can home.

Bilingual Yoga

 

Cultivate presence through breath-linking movements in this vinyasa yoga class cued in both English and Spanish. Cues will be the same in both languages, and those familiar with yoga will find a common language through the traditional Sanskrit names of the poses. This flowing, dynamic class is beneficial for all practitioners, and teaches important foundations while leaving space for more advanced practitioners to play.

Day of Mindfulness

In this workshop you will learn or deepen your understanding of the practice of mindfulness through teachings and direct experience of sitting and walking meditation, mindful yoga, and body scan. Inspired by the secular teachings of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, this workshop is designed to offer an urban retreat day as a way to de-stress and re-capture the joy of living each moment fully.

Enjoying Nature with Fountain Pens

Using fountain pens is a wonderfully different and relaxing way to write and draw, especially when combined with nature! This course will teach you the basics of using and maintaining a fountain pen. You will also have an opportunity to sample various types of pens, paper and ink to help you decide which you prefer. You’ll even receive a fountain pen and notebook that are yours to keep! Open to all skill levels. Lecture style class with a hands-on portion that allows students to try out different fountain pens, inks and papers.

Evening Vinyasa Yoga at the Gardens

Looking for an amazing place to practice your yoga skills, how about the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens?

Vinyasa yoga weaves beautiful movement with challenging postures, and cultivates a sense of peace and calm by the end of each yoga class. Practicing vinyasa yoga on a daily basis can improve posture, flexibility, and endurance. Garden Harvest and Roots

Fall is the perfect season for connecting with roots. We spend time grounding and digging medicinal roots in the garden, discussing seasonal energy patterns, preventative care, digging tools & good practices regarding harvesting roots. Fall can also be chaotic and stressful, so we will make immune-boosting, sickness-fighting, stress-combatting remedies like cough syrup, adaptogenic root beer and kombucha. This class is an exploration of Naikan, or "looking inside." Explore practical ways to become more aware of blessings that often go unseen even when in plain view. Take home exercises to help open heart and mind to the peace available in our worlds.

Carol O'Dowd is a Certified Mindfulness Instructor and Registered Psychotherapist, certified in Japanese Methods of Psychology. She is trained in Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and has completed Naikan retreats. She is currently studying Horticultural Therapy uses therapeutic horticulture techniques in her Psychotherapy practice.
