They work well together but are often challenged by poor posture, overexertion, dehydration and other potentially disruptive forces. But there are herbs that can help us to manage the aches, pains and inflammations that come with the territory. In this class we learn about the muscular-skeletal system, potential problems and the herbs that help us to manage them!

She is trained and certified in community herbalism, permaculture design, reflexology, reiki and wellness coaching. Japanese Chabako In The Gardens

 

The tea ceremony has been an integral part of Japanese culture for centuries, prized for its inclusion of many of Japan's traditional arts. One key aspect in the appreciation of tea is the celebration of each season. This tea ceremony takes place not in the traditional teahouse but out in the Gardens among nature, which is essential to much of the expressiveness of the practice. This immersive demonstration of the Chabako practice (boxed tea), is specifically designed to be enjoyed outdoors, where tea and a sweet will be served along with question-led discussion on tea and the seasonal motifs within the Gardens.

Instructor: Lindsey Higo is student of the Japanese Way of Tea and has studied in the Rocky Mountains for almost 10 years. She has also attended an intensive study program in Kyoto, Japan at the Urasenke Professional School of Tea.

Special Instructions: Please bring a pair of clean white socks and wear comfortable clothing (long pants /skirts). In this tea ceremony there will be kneeling or sitting directly on the felt and mats on the ground or a short chair, shoes are not permitted on the felt.

 

Japanese Tea Ceremony

 

For centuries, the tea ceremony has been considered the epitome of Japanese life, based on harmony, respect, purity, tranquility and elegant simplicity. Come experience the real thing - a traditional ceremony inside our authentic Japanese Tea House in the Japanese Garden.

Each ceremony is held in the Ella Mullen Weckbaugh Tea House in Shofu-En, the Japanese Garden, at Denver Botanic Gardens.

 

Price: $35, $30 members

Special Instructions: Meet at the tea house at 10 a.m, with a pair of white socks. Jeans, shorts or short skirts are not permitted. Please turn off all cell phones during the ceremony.

 

 

Kundalini Yoga - Single Session

Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening energy and unlocking our inner potential through breathing techniques, movements, stretching, meditation and mantra. This ancient and sacred practice is the oldest form of yoga and is an effective way to recharge and heal the body.

The class, taught by Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., Master of Kundalini yoga, starts and ends with beautiful and ancient chants which open and calm the heart. A carefully planned sequence of postures, movements and breathing exercises, called a kriya, follows. The techniques stimulate the nervous and immune systems, while improving strength and flexibility. Participants may find a peace of mind and experience benefits including relief from back pain, stress, addiction, depression, insomnia and weight control.

Lavender Festival - Growing Lavender in Your Landscape

In this class, students will learn all about growing lavender in your garden. This class will explore the different attributes of the different species and cultivars that we can grow in the Rocky Mountains and high desert. We will explore how to maintain your plant to encourage long life, review watering, and pruning and growing requirements. Learn how to incorporate lavender in a xeriscape garden and which plants compliment lavender. Each student will go home with their own lavender plant, hand sickle, and growing guide.

Owner of Sage Creations Organic Farm, Paola Legarre has worked in organic farming and marketing for the last 25 years. In looking to continue Paola’s commitment to organic farming and raising her family in Colorado’s clean air and wholesome way of life, her and her family moved to Palisade in 2005.

Paola’s first lavender planting was in 2006. As her lavender fields grew, she extended her product line to include certified organic essential oil, bath and body products, and lavender plant starts. Sage Creations currently has 5 acres in lavender production and grows 3 species and 50 different cultivars of lavender. Paola manages the farm and maintains lavender fields, medicinal herb crops, heirloom vegetables and a cherry orchard by using sustainable farming practices; nourishing soil life, not using herbicides or synthetic fertilizers and encouraging the beneficial insects through diversified plant hedge rows, companion planting and insect releases.

Lotion Making and Spirit Herbal Remedies

The first portion of this class focuses on making your own hydrating herb-infused lotion. Incorporate infused herbal oils for an added skin replenishing boost. The second portion of class focusses on learning to work with flower essences and herbs for the dream-space. Tying together the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of working with plants we can see a broader view their impact in our lives. We explore the ways plants have been traditionally used to connect us to spiritual guidance through dreams.

There, he began to cultivate a great curiosity and appreciation for the diverse flora found along the hiking trails. In 2007, he left his career as a food scientist and worked as a seasonal gardener for Denver Botanic Gardens. After one year, he was hired full time as a horticulturalist. Throughout his years at the Gardens he has worked with tropical plants, native plants, vegetables and herbs. After receiving his Herbalist Certification here in Denver, Blake immediately began working with the vast array of medicinal plants growing in the Gardens. He founded the Denver Medicinal Plant Society in 2015, created and maintains several medicinal plant beds at the Gardens  York Street location, and has laid the foundation for the Gardens  first Herbalist Certificate Program. As a certified yoga instructor, Blake has led more than 1,000 yoga classes over six years and created a nationally recognized yoga program here at the Gardens. Blake believes in a multifaceted approach to health and wellness: eat well, move your body, never stop learning, get outside and connect.

 

 

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

The foundation of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the cultivation of mindfulness – clear, non-judgmental attention to the present moment – with regard to the ongoing experience of body, feelings, emotions, and mind. MBSR studies reveal its power to reduce medical symptoms and psychological stress while enhancing the health and well-being of program participants.

Designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., MBSR consists of 8 weekly sessions and a one-day silent retreat. Various mindfulness tools are learned and practiced in a group context and continued between class sessions.

 

Price: $400, $350 members, includes $25 for materials.

Instructor: Janet Solyntjes, MA, has taught meditation and body awareness disciplines since 1984. She teaches Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in both non-profit and corporate settings internationally and is the co-founder of The Center for Courageous Living. Janet is an Adjunct Professor at Naropa University, a senior teacher for Shambhala International, and leads residential meditation programs at retreat centers in the US and Canada.

 

Morning Hatha Yoga

Morning Hatha Yoga is an all-levels practice, open to everyone! Come unwind through gentle movement, stretching, pranayama and guided meditation. This class holds space to allow the student to gain strength and flexibility at their own pace with an emphasis on safety and alignment.

 

Instructor: Meredith Saver. What began as a physical journey for Meredith quickly grew into a mental and emotional one, too. Her yoga mat has always held space for her to “come home” in her body and in her heart. In this this often-challenging and ever-changing life, yoga serves as her “drishti”- her external point of focus that draws awareness inward. In 2015 Meredith completed 500 hours of yoga teacher training at the Nosara Yoga Institute in Costa Rica with Don and Amba Stapleton. While she is drawn to many forms of yoga, Meredith’s Hatha vinyasa classes are a well-rounded, playful and intelligent blend of movement and meditation. As a teacher it is always her aim to create a safe learning environment so that anyone can show up to step on their mat and find their slice of “coming home.”

Cat is a holistic practitioner and wellness educator with 19 years of professional experience assisting people to achieve optimal physical and emotional health. Utilizing her skills as a certified herbalist, nutritionist, nature and forest therapy guide, and practitioner of nonviolent communication, she skillfully incorporates a combination of wellness practices into her work with the intention of empowering people to co-create optimal wellness for themselves and their communities. Join Horticulturalist and Herbalist Blake Burger on a walking tour of the gardens featuring medicinal plants. Pour a glass of your favorite summer drink and reconnect with nature as we take a beautiful summer stroll! This informative and practical tour will showcase a few of the many medicinal plants growing throughout the Denver Botanic Gardens. Learn about the healing connection between humans and plants, and how to turn garden grown plants into medicine right in your own home.

Skin Spa

Learn to effectively make affordable skin care products that are all natural, garden fresh and excellent for your skin. There are many herbs growing here in Colorado that help clear, moisturize and revitalize your skin. There is plenty to take home after an afternoon in the kitchen. Make a rose skin serum. Learn the process of making a tulsi hydrosol. Finally, make a skin scrub with fresh lemon balm and a calendula honey mask made with bentonite clay.

Summertime Tea in the Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens and Denver Tea Room present a beautiful morning of tea tasting and education.

Margo Seymour, tea sommelier, pastry chef, and owner of The Denver Tea Room, will present an example of a traditional afternoon tea service, with a nod to the various cultures that also enjoy the practice of taking tea. Guests will taste several teas, traditional sandwiches, and desserts. Join us in the Solarium or the Annuals Pavilion, with fine china and linens, to learn about the tea process, the difference between "high tea" and "low tea", and how to steep the perfect cup of tea.

Sunrise Vinyasa Yoga at the Gardens

Looking for an amazing place to practice your yoga skills, how about the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens?

Vinyasa yoga weaves beautiful movement with challenging postures, and cultivates a sense of peace and calm by the end of each yoga class. Practicing vinyasa yoga on a daily basis can improve posture, flexibility, and endurance. Beyond the physical benefits, yoga helps to bring a sense of clarity to challenging situations in life, reminds us to stay present and focused in an ever-changing environment, and can help us find happiness and contentment in our surroundings.

The postures practiced in this challenging class will promote alignment, flexibility, focus, endurance and help detoxify the body.

When it is chilly, we will meet in the Orangery (front of the greenhouse complex). There will be signs starting from the after-hours entrance on the north side of the main entry that will direct participants.

Tibetan Singing Bowls Concert

Denver yoga instructor and sound healer Chris Anne Coviello and her husband Jason Coviello will be performing together to bring you this spring treat. The concert will begin with Jason playing his Hang Drum which is a very rare steel drum that is made by only two people in the world. Some say it sounds like a stringed instrument. Jason's Hang Drum is tuned to the note that vibrationally corresponds to the heart chakra and when he plays the drum, he takes you on a heart-opening journey.

Jason and Chris Anne will then begin playing the singing bowls which are tuned to all the different musical notes that correspond to the different chakras, so they will balance the energy in the body. And since we are made up of mostly water, the vibrational effect will be a full body cellular massage.

Tibetan Singing bowls have been used for thousands of years as instruments of healing.

So come and relax and close your eyes and drift into an altered state which facilitates the body to heal. Make sure you wear comfy clothes and bring a yoga mat or blanket so that you may lie down and let the bells carry away with them all that no longer serves you.
