Family Make and Take: Dia de Los Muertos Miniature Nicho Planters

Explore the cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos as you create a Día de los Muertos-themed miniature nicho planter decorated with traditional representations of the holiday. Nichos are small, hand-made three-dimensional display boxes used to display lovingly crafted scenarios and are often used as a remembrance to an important figure or loved one. Families are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones to include in their nicho. Materials provided are appropriate for children ages 5 and up. Preregistration is required.

 

Family Make and Take programs offer a space for children and their grownups to connect with natural materials and create together. These self-guided and self-paced programs are designed to provide a creative environment that sparks imagination. The Gardens provides the space and supplies. You and your family provide the ideas and creativity!

 

Price: $15 per project fee non-members; $12 per project fee members. Each project fee includes one nicho box, plant and access to a variety of natural and manmade materials to use for decoration.

Family Workshop: Chocolate Treats

Explore the chocolate tree and its celebrated history. Follow the journey of a cacao bean and discover how chocolate is made. Join us and create a box of delicious chocolate treats to take home. This workshop is designed for families with children ages 5-10.

 

Workshops offer families a hands-on guided opportunity to learn about the science and enchantment behind the plants in our everyday lives. Workshops include a guided garden exploration and hands on projects for grownups and children to create together while exploring the natural world.

 

Price: $12 non-member adult, $10 member adult; $17 non-member child, $15 member child. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited.

Family Workshop: Munch Munch, Crunch Crunch Tasty Veggie Snacks

Explore the plants growing in the Home Harvest Garden and discover how to make tasty and fun back to school snacks. Make savory dips, create vegetable sculptures, and decorate a reusable lunch sack to take home with you.

All adults attending the workshop must register for the program. Non-participating siblings do not participate in the activities.

Family Workshop: Pollination Exploration!

What do bees, beetles, bats and birds have in common? They all help our plants grow! Join us as we observe pollinators and learn about the process of pollination. Create a pollinator habitat to take home with you.

Family Workshop: Weaving Works of Wonder

Gather the family and discover the wonders of weaving as you explore Chatfield Farms' feature art installation by Patrick Dougherty. Take a guided walk in and around Dougherty's larger-than-life site-specific installation. Complete your experience by weaving natural materials to create small-scale outdoor ornaments for your family. Preregistration is required and class size is limited.

Home on the Range: The Story of a Prairie Farm

Presented and managed by the City of Aurora

Get ready to step back in time when visiting the prairie sod home village at the Plains Conservation Center. Enjoy a wagon ride and light snack while touring an 1800s-style sod village, then interact with and feed our resident farm animals. Learn how early settlers survived life on the prairie, including how they got their food and endured the many hardships of homesteading.

This program take place Wednesdays - Sundays from 3-4 p.m.

The City of Aurora Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department's mission is to encourage active lifestyles and create healthy environments for people, nature and community.

Summer Low Sensory Mornings and Evenings

Experience Denver Botanic Gardens without the crowds.

The Gardens will open early on select mornings and will stay open later on select evenings for those who wish to connect with plants in a safe, restful location.

This therapeutic horticulture program is intended to give individuals and families who prefer a quiet, less crowded environment a chance to experience the Gardens with limited attendance. During sensory mornings/evenings you are invited to explore on your own or participate in various hands-on activities at the Gardens that will inspire curiosity and awaken your senses.
