Homeschool Programs

Spend a day at the Gardens with your family exploring plant based themes. Each day focuses on one subject with a variety of hands-on activities, tours and take-home projects that families can do together. All ages are welcome, however activities are designed for ages 5-10. Activities will be available from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m; families can visit activity stations at their own pace and timing. Families are welcome to explore the Gardens before or after the program time.

 

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations more than one week prior to a class are subject to a 15% cancellation fee. Cancellations with less than one weeks notice are non-refundable; please consider your payment a donation to the Gardens.

Homeschool Days offer families the opportunity to explore plant based themes through a variety of hands-on activities, tours and take-home projects that families can do together. Topics in the 2014-2015 series include History at Hildebrand Ranch, Exhibit Exploration – Chihuly, Plants that Changed the World, Mysteries of Mycology and Starting a Garden.

 

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while at the Gardens. Food will also be available for purchase from Offshoots Café. Please note that all activities will take a 30 minute break from 12:00-12:30 for families, staff and volunteers to enjoy lunch.

 

Price: $44 for all 5 Homeschool Days One adult per family is free of charge. Additional adults will need to pay $6.50 each, payable on the day of the program. Children two and under are free of charge, but may not create take-home activities. The program fee includes all day admission to the Gardens.

 

Homeschool Day: Exhibit Exploration - Chihuly

Journey through art and nature as you engage in a garden-wide exploration of Denver Botanic Gardens’ current art exhibit. Learn how art intermingles with science as we make connections between the Gardens and art. Discover your own creativity and make your own fanciful art piece inspired by the featured artist’s works.

Homeschool Day: History at Hildebrand Ranch

Spend the day at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield and get a glimpse of what it was like to farm a hundred years ago. Find out what makes the plants and animals of natural grassland and riparian ecosystems unique as you stroll along Deer Creek.

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. Please note that all activities will take a 30 minute break from 12:00-12:30 for families, staff and volunteers to enjoy lunch.

 

Note: This program takes place at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield located near the intersections of C-470 and Wadsworth Blvd. in Littleton.

Homeschool Day: Mysteries of Mycology

While often thought to be plants, fungus such as mold, yeast and mushrooms make up their very own kingdom! Join us as we explore the similarities and differences between plants and fungi, investigate specimens from the Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi and mix up your own bread mix to take home.

 

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while at the Gardens. Food will also be available for purchase from Offshoots Café. Please note that all activities will take a 30 minute break from 12:00-12:30 for families, staff and volunteers to enjoy lunch.

Homeschool Day: Plants that Changed the World

Plants have played an important role throughout history. Join us as we discover how early explorers and imaginative inventors helped spread the flavors of the world, discovered new plants and found unique uses of plants. Plant an herb used around the world to take home with you.

Homeschool Day: Starting a Garden

Discover the basics of garden design as you explore the many different gardening styles at Denver Botanic Gardens. Learn the ins and outs of gardening as you investigate the science of soil, compost and companion planting. Plant a variety of seeds to start your own garden at home.
