Colorado Wetlands at Chatfield Farms

Explore the riparian ecosystem at Chatfield Farms. Develop an appreciation for the balance between human, animal and plant interactions in our Colorado wetlands. We will immerse ourselves in citizen science, visit beaver dams and learn about the restoration project taking place at Deer Creek. Appropriate for K-12 teachers.

0.5 semester hours of graduate level relicensure credit from the Colorado School of Mines is available on the day of the class for an additional $40.

Feeding Communities, An Introduction to Urban Farming

The Feeding Communities course provides an overview of all the skills necessary to plan and manage an urban agriculture project ranging in size from a backyard garden to a multi-acre city lot. Included in this course are lessons on design, soil prep, tool usage, seed starting, pest and diseases, harvesting, and next steps. All lessons are taught by professionals in the urban agriculture field.

Instructor: Brien Darby has worked for the Denver Botanic Gardens for over five years both in the greenhouses and as the urban agriculture specialist. She is passionate about vegetable growing, composting, and sustainability. In addition to serving on the board of directors for the American Community Gardening Association, Brien serves locally on the Colorado Food Guild and the Denver Local Food Shift committee. Before working for the Botanic Gardens, Brien worked as the farm manager for 63rd Street Farms in Boulder, CO and attended college at Naropa University, also in Boulder, CO.

Price: $95, $85 members

Special Instructions: 1.5 semester hour of graduate level relicensure credit from the Colorado School of Mines is available on the day of the class for an additional $85.

 

 

 

Understanding and Teaching Global Food Issues

This multi-day workshop will support teachers interested in participating with their students in the World Food Prize Colorado Youth Institute through Colorado State University. At the World Food Prize Colorado Youth Institute, high school students will present a research paper doucumenting a global challenge and a solution to the challenge in a country of their choice. Topics covered will incude food systems, sustainable agriculture, the state of food security around the world, and scientific writing at the high school and early college lever. Curriculum used to teach these topics will also be covered.

Instructors include Dr. Sarada Krishnan, Director of Horticulture and Center for Global Initiatives at Denver Botanic Gardens and Brien Darby, Manager of Urban Food Programs at Denver Botanic Gardens.
