Building a Schoolyard Garden

Learn how to create a simple vegetable or habitat garden in your schoolyard, either in the ground or in containers. Get tips on gardening, plants suitable for the school year season and ideas on how to incorporate a schoolyard garden curriculum into your classroom curriculum. Appropriate for K-12 teachers.

0.5 semester hours of graduate level relicensure credit from the Colorado School of Mines is available on the day of the class for an additional $40.

Colorado Wetlands at Chatfield Farms

Explore the riparian ecosystem at Chatfield Farms. Develop an appreciation for the balance between human, animal and plant interactions in our Colorado wetlands. We will immerse ourselves in citizen science, visit beaver dams and learn about the restoration project taking place at Deer Creek. Appropriate for K-12 teachers.

Feeding Communities, An Introduction to Urban Farming

The Feeding Communities course provides an overview of all the skills necessary to plan and manage an urban agriculture project ranging in size from a backyard garden to a multi-acre city lot. Included in this course are lessons on design, soil prep, tool usage, seed starting, pest and diseases, harvesting, and next steps. All lessons are taught by professionals in the urban agriculture field.

Instructor: Brien Darby has worked for the Denver Botanic Gardens for over five years both in the greenhouses and as the urban agriculture specialist. She is passionate about vegetable growing, composting, and sustainability. In addition to serving on the board of directors for the American Community Gardening Association, Brien serves locally on the Colorado Food Guild and the Denver Local Food Shift committee. Before working for the Botanic Gardens, Brien worked as the farm manager for 63rd Street Farms in Boulder, CO and attended college at Naropa University, also in Boulder, CO.

Nature Writing Along the Platte

Explore nature writing and nature journaling along the South Platte River Trail.Learn more about the ecology and hydrology of this important U.S. tributary as well as the challenges the South Platte and those that live along it face as Denver and the surrounding areas expand.We will explore how the South Platte s health has been affected by human activity as it flows through urban and agricultural areas.Appropriate for K-12 Teachers

 

Rocky Mountain Horticulture I: Gardening Principles

Rocky Mountain Gardening Required Course Group I

This class details all the specifics necessary to grow plants successfully in the Rocky Mountain region. Soil preparation, plant choice and location, planting techniques and year-round maintenance specific to Colorado will be covered. We'll review plant growth, fertilizers, microclimates and more.

Instructor: Thaddeus Gourd attended New Mexico State University where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Pest Management and Horticulture. He earned a Master’s Degree with thesis study in Entomology at New Mexico State University and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology with emphasis on plant parasitic nematodes at North Carolina State University. Thaddeus has worked over 19 years in the private sector of the plant science business and since 2000, has worked at Colorado State University Extension as an Agriculture Agent and Director for Adams County. He has extensive experience of gardening and greenhouse management and has been involved in the practice of Integrated Pest Management for over 30 years.

Special Instructions: All students are requested to bring graph paper and pencils to the first class

Rocky Mountain Horticulture II

Rocky Mountain Gardening Required Course Group I

Rocky Mountain Horticulture II is an introduction to general information on plant management. Each of these four classes will present an overview by an expert from the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service. Topics include the identification and control of lawn and garden weeds, diseases and insects, and integrated pest management.

Teaching Plant Science Through Math and Literacy

Plants can be used to teach math, literature, writing, and social studies, and this class will teach you how to do it! We’ll explore a variety of hands-on learning opportunities using garden and classroom plants to teach content requirements in a variety of subjects. Appropriate for K-6 teaches.
