Every Flower Counts: Cultivating Minds and Landscapes for Pollinators

The second annual Pollinator Summit convened by the Colorado Pollinator Network brings together nationally and regionally recognized pollinator experts to present and discuss strategies for protecting and managing land to support pollinators in Colorado. This Summit is designed for organizations, agencies, businesses, professionals, educators, growers, land managers, researchers and volunteers actively working to conserve and protect pollinators and their habitats.

Bringing Back the Pollinators: An Integrated Landscape Approach to Pollinator Conservation

 

Life on Earth as we know it depends upon pollinators. An estimated 85% of the world’s flowering plants depend on animals—mostly insects—for pollination. Pollinators sustain wild plant communities that feed and shelter myriad other wildlife. Pollinators are also crucial to agriculture and to our diet: more than two-thirds of crop species—including fruit, vegetable, spice, nut, and oilseed crops for people and forage for livestock—are dependent upon pollinators.

Unfortunately, pollinator declines put all of this at risk. Beekeepers are losing 30% to 40% of their hives each year and numerous wild, unmanaged pollinator species native to North America are also experiencing declines. Over a quarter of North America’s bumble bees have are at risk of extinction and monarch butterfly populations have declined by more than 80%.

Scott will discuss the latest science on pollinators, their importance and decline, and how all people can take action to help.

 

Scott Hoffman Black is an internationally renowned conservationist who has been at the forefront of the pollinator conservation movement for two decades. He is executive director of the Xerces Society, which under his leadership has become the premier invertebrate conservation organization in North America.

 

Scott’s work has led to protection and restoration of habitat on hundreds of thousands of acres of rangelands, forests, and farmland as well as protection for many endangered species. He is an author of the best-selling Attracting Native Pollinators and Gardening for Butterflies and has written more than two hundred other publications. His work has been honored with several awards, including the 2011 Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences Honor Alumnus Award and the U.S. Forest Service Wings Across the Americas 2012 Butterfly Conservation Award.

World travelers without the passport: review of plants fingerprints

 

Pollen grains are not only essential in plant reproduction, they are also valuable tools in countless other applications. A pollen grain’s uniquely ornamented outer wall, called the exine, consists of sporopollenin, which is the most resistant material known in the organic world. It is chemically stable and remains unchanged in pollen grains that are 500 million years old. It is resistant to non-oxidative chemicals, enzymes and strong chemical reagents, concentrated acids and bases and remains unchanged when pollen grains are heated to 300°C (572°F). With these unique qualities, pollen grains can provide insight into climate change and plant-climate interactions, landscape development and human impact in vegetation throughout the history of mankind. Pollen grains can even help solve murders.

 

Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski of Denver Botanic Gardens is a Finnish-born scientist with a Ph.D. in quaternary biology from the University of Lund, Sweden and D.Sc. in aeropalynology from the University of Stockholm. She has worked with pollen grains since her first year in college and has been involved in all aspects of them from marine archaeology to asthma and from lake sediments in the arctic tundra to the snowfields in South Georgia, Antarctic. She is the author and co-author of many scholarly publications and has taught at universities worldwide. Since 2007, she has coordinated and managed Denver Botanic Gardens’ School of Botanical Art and Illustration.

Amazing Vegetables A to Z Full Series

AMAZING VEGETABLES A TO Z FULL SERIES

 

This is the class that will hone your skills as an amazing vegetable gardener. It is designed to take beginners to a new level and remind intermediate gardeners of the success strategies that always work when we go off course and forget the science of what got us to success in the first place. We will cover the science of vegetable gardening, do some myth busting, and provide you with some clear cut strategies to get the biggest harvest from the space you have.

The classes are 2 ½ hours each and are designed so that you can take the entire series or drop in for a refresher on the single class or classes that you want to brush up on. We will use a combination of hands on and lecture and demonstration to keep you engaged.

Please note: We will not cover gardening in containers in depth in this class. If that is your interest, please see Crops in Pots.

 

Session 1: Raised Beds

Planning the best location, choosing in ground or raised beds and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We will look at re-purposing materials to create raised beds. We will cover soil building and choosing amendments. We will build around what has not worked for you in the past and set you on a course for improvement for your 2017 vegetable garden. Every season is a Do-Over!

 

Session 2: Planting

Planting is the focus of this session. How to decide what to plan, the seasons of the vegetable garden and getting the biggest bang for your gardening buck. We will cover cool season and warm season plants and the ones that grow best here in Colorado. Then take a look at seed starting and see a demonstration of starting seeds inside and direct sowing outside as well as transplanting. Then we will cover spacing strategies designed to give you the biggest harvest for the space you have available.

 

Session 3: Extended Gardening

Keeping the Garden going for 3 seasons and beyond is the theme of this session. We will cover the importance of Crop Rotation and how to do it. We will learn different ways to succession plant and how it can maximize the harvest. We will address season extension strategies to protect your crops. We will also cover the concept of companion planting and what is true and what is not.

 

Session 4: Pests, Problems, & Harvesting

The most common pests and diseases of the vegetable garden will be addressed, how to spot problems before they get away from you and good cultural practices to avoid problems, organics, watering, fertilizing and insect and disease controls. We will also discuss how to know when your veggies are ready for harvest.

In addition to being a multilingual yoga instructor, Noemi Nunez has been an immigration attorney, competitive gymnast, environmental activist. Take your pen and ink skills to a new level of sophistication. Explore the Gardens’ limitless world of color, texture and complex botany and incorporate this information into black-and-white illustrations. Working with both technical pen and traditional quill, learn advanced techniques to make strokes mimic the fuzz on a fern, the down in a milkweed pod or the mottled colors of a variegated begonia. Learn how to layer and manipulate lines and stipples to develop a full range of value, texture and atmospheric perspective. Pen techniques take on new meaning as you flesh out the final inked illustration of a plant of your choice.

Combine drawing skills and your knowledge of color mixing as you discover the delight of putting brush to paper to learn the specific techniques of transparent watercolor. Instruction, demonstration and practical exercises will guide you through a variety of watercolor techniques: flat and graded washes, highlights and drybrush detail. Learn to build washes for depth of tone and shading, and how to create soft and hard edges. Watercolor basics got you started; now develop your confidence as you work toward completing a finished plate from a live specimen in this most traditional of botanical media. The emphasis here is on bringing it all together. Learn and refine additional techniques through instruction, demonstration and practice, with special attention given to layering, shading and building form. Discover brush techniques and colors that enhance perspective and depth. Follow painting steps through completion, from broad washes to final detail. Learn how to fix mistakes and understand why watercolor is a forgiving medium.

Café Botanique

Café Botanique is a part of the Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate Program and is open to Botanical Art and Illustration students, Gardens' members, the general public, academia and artists. The 30-40 minute talk starts at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by a discussion. This lecture offers one elective credit hour in the BI-program. Fee: $5.

 

 

Carving and Cocktail Hour

Show off, explore and unwind by carving a pumpkin - together. Join this relaxed environment you'll be able to let your creative juices flow in a fun, upbeat, non judgemental experience.

You will receive a pumpkin, a pattern, and a mini-kit of Barry’s favorite, professional carving tools. Barry Brown - Master Pumpkin Carver, guides each couple through simple tips and techniques. Reveal your strength, intelligence, artistry and pleasure! You’ll connect and relax as you assist each other through the easy steps. The Grand Lighting Ceremony ends the evening, when we dim the lights, then illuminate the amazing pumpkin carvings all at once. Bring your camera!

 

Instructor: Barry Brown, is excited to show you how to carve pumpkins like the ones he carved for TV shows including the Today Show, The Tonight Show, the David Letterman Show, Good Morning America, Monday Night Football, and movies including Hocus Pocus. He has carved pumpkins on every local TV news station and the Colorado & Company show. Several stations have even come out to interview him AND film special stories about his National Grand Prize Award-Winning pumpkin carving skills.

Special Instructions: Each duo will receive one pumpkin and one carving kit. This event is a BYOB. Please bring your own drinks and snacks. This is a 21 and over event, please have your id with you. You will receive a pumpkin, a pattern, and a mini-kit of Barry’s favorite carving tools.

 

 

Cherokee Winter Nature Tour - At Cherokee Ranch and Castle

Those lucky enough to have hiked Cherokee Ranch know that there are a wealth of habitats and a rich flora that distract your eyes downwards, even as the vistas of the rugged backbone of the Rockies and distant misty towers of downtown Denver tempt you to look further away. We have experienced toasty winter days that were breathless and surprisingly sunny, as well as blustery days in the summer. One thing is for sure—you will never be bored on a Cherokee hike! This year we are starting much earlier—for better birding. But the plants will already be awake!

 

Whoever says winter is the “dormant” season? Wise naturalists know that nature does not sleep, you can now SEE those birds flitting in the bare branches. Buds are set on everything, and there is much more than just bark, branches and berries to liven a walk. You can see two species of Chickadees and Nuthatches that never stop in their search for food and there are a few last lingering hints of flowers. You will be surprised at how many evergreens there really are; not just pines and junipers and Oregon Grape, but many of our native shrubs and forbs keep living foliage and rosettes through the winter: they are still hard at work chlorophyll pumping! You might also be surprised to know that some Dark-eyed Juncos fly all the way from the Pacific Northwest and even Canada to winter at Cherokee. Other winter species include Flicker, Woodpeckers and a resident Red-tailed Hawk. What better time and place than Cherokee Ranch in the bright, winter light.

Chipotle Film Series: Hanna Ranch

The Chipotle Film Series, presented by Chipotle Mexican Grill, includes three films relating to sustainable food practices, organic farming and community agriculture. Each evening includes food provided by Chipotle, a screening of the film, and a post-film panel discussion. The films take place between September and November at Denver Botanic Gardens at York Street.

 

Film: Hanna Ranch

Hanna Ranch is a feature documentary about visionary cattleman Kirk Hanna and his personal struggle to protect a once prominent way of life in Colorado. Born into a life on the family ranch, Hanna became a leader in the environmental ranching movement that set out to protect the West from the relentless encroachment of development and misuse.

Featured in the book Fast Food Nation and dubbed the “eco-cowboy,” he was an early adopter of Holistic Resource Management practices, sat on numerous environmental boards and was president of the Colorado Cattleman’s Association. Hanna’s opinion was so widely sought and respected, many even saw him as a future governor of Colorado. But when his dream of harmony and sustainability ran up against the reality of family conflict and mounting threats to the land, Hanna lost hope.

Kirk’s legacy and fight live on as his family and friends continue to protect the West by saving Hanna Ranch.

Special Instructions: Doors open at 6 p.m. for serving of food, film starts at 6:30 p.m. with a twenty minute panel discussion and question/answer following film.
