2019-2020 Homeschool Days Package

Homeschool Days offer families the opportunity to explore plant-based themes through a variety of hands-on activities, tours and take-home projects that families can do together. Activities are designed for children ages five and up, however all ages are welcome to attend.

 

Plants 101: Root to Seed - August 26, 2019 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Journey from root to seed as you examine plants up-close. Discover the structure and function of the five major plant parts as you dissect plants and explore plant diversity. Plant a house plant cutting to take home with you.

 

Tree-Mendous Trees - October 1, 2019 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Explore the tree-mendous world of trees at Denver Botanic Gardens. Become a tree detective as you learn basic tree identification skills, discover the story told by a tree’s rings and investigate why leaves change color in the fall.

 

Rainforest - January 27, 2019 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Explore your way through the rainforest, its products, diversity and treasures. Discover the layers of the rainforest, how chocolate is made and the unique adaptations that plants in the rainforest have to help them survive.

 

Be a Botanist - February 24, 2020 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Spend a day in the boots of a botanist and investigate plants like a scientist. Discover how plants are classified, examine herbarium specimens, and design an experiment as you get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the things a botanist might do.

 

Nature's Art - March 16, 2020 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Join us for a day of creating, designing and crafting. Learn how nature’s colors, shapes and patterns inspire works of art as you spend the day investigating natural dyes, discovering hidden mathematical patterns and creating one-of-a-kind works of art.

 

Register for all 5 Homeschool Days offered August 2019 through March 2020, and receive a $10 savings over the individual price.

Homeschool Day: Rainforest

Explore your way through the rainforest, its products, diversity and treasures. Discover the layers of the rainforest, how chocolate is made and the unique adaptations that plants in the rainforest have to help them survive.

Homeschool Make and Take: Bird Habitats

See how plants support bird habitats during the Colorado winter as you explore the mutualistic relationship between plants and birds. Use a variety of natural and manmade objects to design and create a bird feeder to support your own backyard bird habitat.

Homeschool Make and Take Programs offer a space for children and their grownups to connect with natural materials and create together! These self-guided and self-paced programs are designed to provide a creative environment that sparks imagination. The Gardens provides the space and supplies, you and your homeschooler provide the ideas and creativity!

Special Instructions: Choose a 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., or 12:30 p.m. start time. The make and take project will be available to you and your family from the admission time you choose until 2:00pm.

Play On! Performing Arts at Denver Botanic Gardens

Gardening and performing arts come together to spark creativity and imagination in this new program series. Children engage in acting, music and movement activities throughout this five-week series as they are guided by a Play On! teaching artist to create, rehearse and perform a play based on the story of the “Gigantic Turnip” by Aleksei Tolstoy and Niamh Sharkey. This program series is designed for children ages 5-10.

 

Play On! is a locally owned and operated small business that encourages Denver-area school age children to explore their passion of the arts. Play On! offers highly collaborative performing arts programs using a hands-on creative approach that allows for a student to find their voice on the stage and beyond.

Seed to Table Gardening Series for Homeschoolers

Calling all aspiring gardeners! In this five-week series of classes, families will deepen their understanding of planting and growing a successful garden in Colorado. Grow plants from start to finish while learning to sow your own seeds, working side by side with a Denver Botanic Gardens horticulturist and developing gardening techniques. Each week, children will engage in active hands-on learning both in and out of the classroom. At the end of five weeks each young aspiring gardener will take home a seasonal container garden. This program series is designed for children ages 6-10.
