A Simple Guide to Planning a Seed Garden

Learn how planning ahead can yield big results from your seed harvest. Knowing how a seed is saved allows you to let nature take its course and give back even more than you put in. This class breaks down the easy-to-save, intermediate-to-save and advanced-to-save varieties most commonly grown in home gardens. The seed life cycle is already happening in your garden so it’s easy to integrate seed saving into your current practices. With a little planning, you can greatly increase your personal seed bank and keep plants – including vegetables, herbs and flowers – vigorous and adapting in your garden.

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

This is the class that will hone your skills as an amazing vegetable gardener. It is designed to take beginners to a new level and remind intermediate gardeners of the success strategies that always work when we go off course and forget the science of what got us to success in the first place. We will cover the science of vegetable gardening, do some myth busting, and provide you with some clear cut strategies to get the biggest harvest from the space you have.

The classes are 2 ½ hours each and are designed so that you can take the entire series or drop in for a refresher on the single class or classes that you want to brush up on. We will use a combination of hands on and lecture and demonstration to keep you engaged.

Please note: We will not cover gardening in containers in depth in this class. If that is your interest, please see Crops in Pots.

 

Session 1: Raised Beds

March 20, 2019- 6:00pm

Planning the best location, choosing in ground or raised beds and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We will look at re-purposing materials to create raised beds. We will cover soil building and choosing amendments. We will build around what has not worked for you in the past and set you on a course for improvement for your 2017 vegetable garden. Every season is a Do-Over!

 

Session 2: Planting

March 27, 2019- 6:00pm

Planting is the focus of this session. How to decide what to plan, the seasons of the vegetable garden and getting the biggest bang for your gardening buck. We will cover cool season and warm season plants and the ones that grow best here in Colorado. Then take a look at seed starting and see a demonstration of starting seeds inside and direct sowing outside as well as transplanting. Then we will cover spacing strategies designed to give you the biggest harvest for the space you have available.

 

Session 3: Extended Gardening

April 3, 2019- 6:00pm

Keeping the Garden going for 3 seasons and beyond is the theme of this session. We will cover the importance of Crop Rotation and how to do it. We will learn different ways to succession plant and how it can maximize the harvest. We will address season extension strategies to protect your crops. We will also cover the concept of companion planting and what is true and what is not.

 

Session 4: Pests, Problems, & Harvesting

April 10, 2019- 6:00pm

The most common pests and diseases of the vegetable garden will be addressed, how to spot problems before they get away from you and good cultural practices to avoid problems, organics, watering, fertilizing and insect and disease controls. We will also discuss how to know when your veggies are ready for harvest.

This is the class for anyone who uses their smartphone camera to create photographs. Whether you’re new to photography or a seasoned pro, there’s more to learn about leveraging this accessible digital technology. You’ll gain insight into the photography skills necessary to make the most out of your images - from shooting to editing. Next, you will also learn the various platforms to share and print your images, and how to keep all of your precious memories safe. Whether you have an iPhone or an Android, join us for a fun-filled class!

Instructor: Jeanette Galie Burkle is a commercial and editorial photographer with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and consulting. Since 2003, Jeanette has successfully owned and managed Galie Photography, while designing and delivering seminars on a wide range of photography topics. An award winning-photographer, Jeanette combines an engineering background with a strong artistic sense. With the belief that photography is part art and part science, she strives to use her unique background to produce art that is infused with a creative vision and improved by knowledge of the underlying scientific principles of photography. She has worked with many corporate clients including ExxonMobil, George Mason University, American Red Cross, John Marshall Bank, AmeriChoice, Medtronic, Harris Corporation, and Long & Foster Realty. Jeanette’s work has been honored through the Virginia Professional Photographers Association with such recognition as the highly distinguished Fuji Masterpiece Award and the Kodak Gallery Award.

Beginning Rocky Mountain Gardening

This course is designed for the Front Range gardener beginner. The basics of what is needed to adjust gardening skills from other climates to the Front Range’s finicky climate are covered. If you have never gardened here before or are looking for more success, this is the class for you! Learn the skills necessary to become an enthusiastic gardener. Annuals, perennials and vegetables are discussed, along with trees and shrubs that thrive in our climate, elevation and varying soils. Plant selection, planting and troubleshooting is discussed.

Subsequent weeks focus on the elements, water needs, fertilizers and organic gardening.

Bilingual Yoga

 

Cultivate presence through breath-linking movements in this vinyasa yoga class cued in both English and Spanish. Cues will be the same in both languages, and those familiar with yoga will find a common language through the traditional Sanskrit names of the poses. This flowing, dynamic class is beneficial for all practitioners, and teaches important foundations while leaving space for more advanced practitioners to play.

Botanical Illustration in Pencil I

Learn to draw! Begin an overview of the specific elements of botanical illustration. Learn the skills of careful observation and realistic drawing in graphite pencil, including line drawing, shading and perspective. Step by step, added techniques help you render accurate perspective, texture and detail. This is the entry course for every program student and a prerequisite for all required courses to follow. Cafe Botanique

Café Botanique is a part of the Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate Program and is open to Botanical Art and Illustration students, Gardens' members, the general public, academia and artists. The 30-40 minute talk starts at 6:30 p.m. and is followed by a discussion. This lecture offers one elective credit hour in the BI-program. Fee: $5.

 

 

Composition for Botanical Illustration

The arrangement of line, shape and color in artwork is itself an art form. The difference between a pleasant picture and amazing artwork is often found in composition. This course begins with a study of recognized masters and contemporary illustrators. Learn how to use compositional elements and principles in your botanical illustration. Create your own thumbnail compositions and develop insight and expertise to enhance your future illustrations.

Evening Vinyasa Yoga at the Gardens

Looking for an amazing place to practice your yoga skills, how about the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens?

Vinyasa yoga weaves beautiful movement with challenging postures, and cultivates a sense of peace and calm by the end of each yoga class. Practicing vinyasa yoga on a daily basis can improve posture, flexibility, and endurance. Beyond the physical benefits, yoga helps to bring a sense of clarity to challenging situations in life, reminds us to stay present and focused in an ever-changing environment, and can help us find happiness and contentment in our surroundings.

The postures practiced in this challenging class will promote alignment, flexibility, focus, endurance and help detoxify the body.

Family Workshop: Winter Fairies

Join us as we create miniature lands for mystical garden friends. Discover which plants fairies prefer as you design, plant and landscape a tiny oasis for a fairy. Each child can create a container garden to take home.

Family Workshops at Denver Botanic Gardens are a great way for families to spend time together while discovering the diversity and importance of plants. Workshops offer families a hands-on opportunity to learn about the science and enchantment behind the plants in our everyday lives, create tasty treats from scratch and explore the natural world.

Classes are designed for families with children ages 5-10. Preregistration is required and class size is limited.

All adults attending the workshop must register for the program. Non-participating siblings do not participate in the activities.

Fearless Shrub Pruning

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

Learn how to prune both deciduous and evergreen shrubs for long term plant health and appearance in this class. Various types of pruning and the situations where they are appropriate will be illustrated. An emphasis will be placed on flowering shrubs and how to prune them for best bloom. For people with overgrown shrubs, rejuvenation pruning to reduce size and reinvigorate growth will be of interest.

Immerse yourself in the Gardens with a horticulturist as your guide. Gain insight into living museum collections and walk away with gardening tips from an expert. Please note that every tour has its own emphasis and is led by a different horticulturist.

Growing Food in the High Mountains

Rocky Mountain Gardening Elective

You can grow food in the mountains! Cord and Penn Parmenter are determined to say ‘yes’ to mountain gardeners. Wind, hail, deer, bears, extreme temperatures -- they’ve heard it all. The Parmenters have been growing organic food at 8,120 ft. elevation since 1992 and their techniques and experiences apply to all of Colorado’s elevations and hardships. The mountains have a long history of providing a large amount of food for the state. This class covers many great foods that thrive in the mountains’ cool weather, wind proof season extenders, hail covers, raised bed preparation, compost options against bears, crop rotation, companion planting, succession planting, vegetables for the shade, mulching, seed saving and more. Altitude doesn’t matter; this class is designed to help all gardeners overcome the wild, wild, west. The Parmenters also touch on their successful, totally sustainable water-storage solar greenhouses and vegetable seed starting using recycled materials.
