Drawing on Tradition: Realism and Rory McEwen

• Mon., June 2, 9, 16, June 23, 30, 9 a.m. – Noon

Instructor: Constance Sayas

Rory McEwen (1932 - 1982) was best known as a folk singer and television personality, but he also produced some of the most resonant botanical images of his time. McEwen started painting flowers at the age of eight and produced series of heritage carnations and pinks as a commission at Cambridge University. His work is very precise and exact in botanical terms, while also a work of art beyond illustration. The class will begin with a study of McEwen’s painting style to understand his realistic simplicity. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, students will first practice from a McEwen’s painting and then compose their own. Focusing on simple and concise painting style and the negative space, students will use a controlled and refined dry brush approach to create a final plate. Fee: $230 member, $285 non-member. Prerequisites: Pencil I, Watercolor I, Light on Form, or Certificate in Botanical Illustration.
