Perspectives Series: Lecture - Bonnie Clark

Growing Autonomy--Gardening at Japanese American Internment Camps

Dr. Bonnie Clark, DU archaeologist, leads the intensive garden archaeology at the Amache internment camp in Colorado, which is revealing the surprising placemaking strategies of confined Americans of Japanese ancestry. When they first entered the camps where they were forced to spend World War II, internees faced a raw, institutional environment. Almost immediately they began to transform the camp landscape through gardening and horticulture, acts of both resistance and personal expression.
